'carbo unloading' and new forest tri...

a little belated, but the new forest tri, back on 04 may, was a good race for me. i went into it feeling pretty sh1t. on the friday night i chucked up the entire contents of my stomach - 'carbo unloading' is the new carbo loading! it must have been something i picked up from alix - i've never been ill so often since we've had kids.

so on saturday i took it as easy as i possibly could. i knocked back about four bottles of lucozade, and managed some dry toast. by the late pm, i didn't rate my chances, but still 12 hours to go, so headed down to my hotel.

5 1/2 hours of consecutive sleep later (that's a good night's sleep for me these days!), felt pretty good and headed to the course. i wanted to make sure that i had enough calories in me, so managed to get one energy bar and two lucozade sports in me before the start, and felt reasonable, but still guessed it was 50/50 if i would make it to the finish.

the lake temperature was officially 14.5C, which while cold enough to freeze your nuts off, was warm enough for the full 1.1km swim. i stuck a couple of swim hats in and got in early to get as warm as possible. with a mass start of 300+, you don't have to be swimming fast to get warm! it's never my best discipline, but i managed to find some feet and took it easy to T1 in 126th place.

the bike was great. i'd recommend this tri to anyone for the scenery. the bike route took a long slow uphill through the new forest, passing plenty of wildlife along hte way. it was pretty exposed up out of the trees and at points i could feel the crosswind buffeting me around. i had about 500ml of water/lucosade sport on the bike and wondered if that would be enough to get me round the run, which i started in 50th place (so 76 places gained on the bike, which was good for confidence).

the run was one of the toughest i've done in a tri. not just undulating, but hilly and on trails for the main part. i plugged away and if it was an accurate 10k, then my 42min was a pretty good time to take me over the line in 45th place.

later on i found out i'd come 2nd in my age group, which was super cool. for a race that i didn't really know if i'd finish, i ended up getting a decent time and a great result. no more racing now until windsor on 15 june, where the goal must be to improve on last year's PB. i love triathlon.

Great result, especially considering the build up Very Happy By the way, the wetsuit works great, seems to fit really well.
