All about Slacko

Name: Steve
Age Group: 45-49
Married: To Rach aka Mrs. Slacko
Kids: 6!! April(21), Sam(19), Kayleigh(16), James(14), Daniel(13), Mikey(9)
Occupation: IT Consultant
Footy Team: Being from Manchester it has to be City!
The story so far:
I've always been into health and fitness. From a young age I played football to a high standard. After retiring from serious football about a decade ago, I kept up my fitness by going to the gym (where I met Rach!) and running. Triathlon always held a fascination, but I always thought it a sport for elite athletes only. Once I found out that ordinary folk did it, I had a word with Rach and we decided we'd both like to give it a go. We did our first event in Oct 2006 - the Bedford Autumn Sprint, got hooked and decided to jump in with both feet and tackle IMUK in 2007 which I completed in 12:30! Cool I followed this in 2008 with 11:46 at IM Austria. The next big target is sub-11hrs at Challenge Barcelona!

Phew, busy weekend!

Friday lunchtime, out for a 40 minute run. Managed to find the gap in the storms which was lucky and the weather was really pleasant for that brief spell. Smile This run was all about form and technique concentrating on all the things that contribute to efficiency and speed - I really enjoyed it. Smile

Rach picked up the Campervan during the day and we spent the evening checking it out. It's in good nick for it's age but is still a 1988 model and is by no means perfect. Still, we love it and will get loads of use out of it staring next weekend at the Double IM! Very Happy

Saturday was spent mainly with the kids. I didn't do any training as I decided to sign up for the MK Oly on Sunday. I had to fix my bike up first and found out that the gear shift cable hadn't snapped but the bracket that holds it to the rear derailleur had! Shocked It still needed a new cable though as the old one got mangled when it got lodged in the jockey wheels.

I also fixed April's bike up and we dropped that over to her on the way out to register for the Oly.

We took the kids out for a nice dinner. Last week before Bedford I had pasta & water for dinner, this week I had Cornish pasty and a pint! Very Happy

Up early on Saturday morning and took a couple of the kids with us to watch. There was a nice, relaxed atmosphere at the race site and I was a bit too relaxed as my wave were already in the water warming up as I ambled over. Shocked I felt a bit like T_C (except twice the body weight and significantly better looking Laughing ).

The Race
This week I managed to set my stop-watch off at the start and went with the bunch. Annoyingly after copping a few punches I ditzed again, I lost my breathing completely and had to breast stroke for 20 seconds to get it under control again. Mad I slowed everything down for a 100 meters or so until my breathing became relaxed then I started to swim quite well. In fact I managed to keep in contact with the 2nd bunch and started to enjoy it. I was over the moon when I got out and my watch said 27 something! W00t They reckon the swim was a bit short but it was still a huge improvement from Bedford last week, I knew at this point my target of sub-2:30 was in the bag.

Swim: 27:27

T1 was a bit long as I was racked at the far side of transition from the swim in and bike out chutes. What I lost here I'd get bake in T2 though. I also had to put socks on this week to protect damage done last week - this seemed to take forever! I pinned my glasses on my bike though so that problem was averted! Very Happy

T1: 2:10

I quickly got into a good tempo on the bike. I decided I was going to push harder than last week as I was confident my legs could handle a 10k run afterwards. I felt very strong on a very quick course, the only incline of note was Chichley Hill which hardly rates as a hill and is over very quickly if you attack it. Nobody in my wave passed me and only 3 speedsters from the younger wave behind me went past. I zipped past plenty though and on the downhill section past transition to start loop 2 the disc wheel was in full flow enabling me to pass 10-15 riders in pretty quick time.

Just out of Olney I recognised a familiar and rather lovely bottom and gave it a pat on the way past. Rach shouted out her swim time and I gave her the thumbs up as I pushed on hard - I was on a mission! Very Happy

There were a lot more people on the course on lap 2 and I was enjoying picking them off. I knew I was on for a course PB and was thrilled when I got off the bike in less than 1:10! Very Happy Avg speed for the bike was 35.6kph/22.1mph - good for me and 3rd fastest in my AG. The biggest plus though was that I made it through a whole ride without falling off!! Laughing

Bike: 1:07:30

Where I lost out in T1, I gained in T2 as the bike in and run out were on my side of transition. Super smooth and quickest T2 in my AG which set me up nicely for a crack at the holy grail of a 2:20 Oly!

T2: 00:32

Straight out of T2 there was a water station where I took a cup of High-5 by mistake. This gave me a slight stomach cramp but fortunately is wasn't severe enough to stop me running, it just caused a bit of discomfort.

I was about a kilometer in when Adam Bowden came storming past me on the way to winning the race with a 30:49 run split! It was impressive to watch but a little deflating! As usual it took me a little while to settle into a decent rythm but I knew the 2:20 was a possibility so I really concentrated on keeping my leg turnover as high as possible and my head high. I was passing a lot more people than were passing me which is quite unusual in short course races - I liked it though! Very Happy

April, Mark and my boys were there to cheer as I passed transition on each loop which was great to see. High-5s for them as I passed! Smile

At the start of the 3rd and final loop I knew the 2:20 was on but only if I caned it. Part of me wanted to ease off and settle for a nice 2:21 but I knew I'd kick myself later for not giving it a good honest try. One thing for sure, I wasn't going to lie in bed that night wondering "what if ..."!

I pushed as hard as I could but with 500m remaining I thought I was going to just miss out. I put everything I had left into that last 500m and turned into the finishing chute with the clock in the 2:19:50s and I pinned my ears back and sprinted for the line. I wasn't sure if I'd made it as I collapsed in a heap trying to catch some breath. I knew it was close but thought it could have been 2:20:00 dead which wouldn't have been funny after last week's result!

Run: 42:17

My youngest son, Mikey, was a bit concerned for my well-being as he patted my head and asked if I was going to die. Laughing I picked myself up and wandered over to Marc & April and asked if they thought I'd made it. Marc reckoned 2:19:59 which was good to hear. I then noticed other finishers walking away from a tent with slips of paper in their hand and comparing notes. I went over, gave my number and got handed a slip with all my splits and my official finishing time of ... (drumroll please)

2:19:58 !!!

I'd done it and was very, very pleased to say the least! Very Happy

10th/37 in my AG at this distance was very satisfying. The winner of my AG beat me by about 9 minutes and his swim was about 8 minutes quicker which is an obvious indicator of what I need to improve!

We then concentrated our efforts on cheering Rach on in the run. She looked strong on her way to a great PB too and even got interviewed by the MC after finishing! Cool

We chatted to the Rofsters for a while and I caught up with JimBoH earlier at the results tent - he did brilliantly as well! Cool

When we got home Rach cooked a very welcome breakfast then we got the roast dinner for 9 on the go for later in the day. The weather was nice enough to eat it outside and was very pleasant. Smile

After dinner it was time to take my kids back. Sad It seemed a very long 6 hour round trip in the miserable wet weather. I made a pit-stop to load up on Red Bull as the early start and evens of the day were catching up a bit. We collapsed into bed shortly before 11pm, very tired indeed. Sleep

Rest day today, very welcome it is too! I'm hoping for a better week training this week. Smile

TTFN!!!
