The Vitruvian - 6th Sept 2008

This was s prime race for me at the end of the season (well, just one more to go next month) and I nearly messed up getting my entry in for this race.

Preparation

Having averaged about 5 miles running a week in training for the past 4 weeks, and still suffering from a painful right shoulder I was not relishing such a toughie ahead. I really ought to have been out the weekend before cycling 50 miles and then running for at least a full 90 minutes (albeit slowly), but the weather had not been that inviting.

The week of this event, I happened to be working up in Scarborough - and had an opportunity to go swimming at dawn, briefly cos it was cold in the North Sea. I had hoped to get out on the bike also or at least a 5 mile run, but having a slight cold, plus work pressures and the thought of the chilly wind and the rain held me back. I left work just before 4pm and arrived at Rutland Water at 6:30pm in time to register at Rutland Water before dinner. I did not have time to pitch tent nor rack my bike. It was dry then, as I walked towards registration in a suit! What a contrast to the other sportily dressed athletes, and more so myself the next day!

No surprises that the night before the race, it was heavy with rain as other TTers at the Fox & Hounds met up for a pre-race dinner. I sat between steve_r & Rob. I recommend the Languini - complements to the chef!

Having been camping just a few weekends ago (also in the rain), the thought of a night under canvas without much sleep after a tough week at work was not the best prep for this race (recalling IMUK when I slept in my wetsuit to keep warm). This time, I remembered the tent, the camp bed and an air bed, BUT forgot my sleeping bag. Rolling Eyes During the meal, after failing to tempt the waitress to let me sleep downstairs with her cat (I made her smile at least), my backup plan was to share a tent with Woody (Tim), a grateful offer as it was quite dark. However, on leaving the restaurant last, I spoke to a few smokers at the door who tried to sort me out with a bed for the night (may God bless them), the chef (an angel indeed) spoke to lady who owned the house across from the F & H, and lo and behold, she had space! Smile In fact, aside from a couple heading for the Burley Horse Trials, there was another couple upstairs (Rachel & Terry) who were doing the Vitruvian also.

I met the two competitors at the 4:30am breakfast. By 5:40am, I was parked and heading to rack my bike. I could hear the briefing whilst still trying to rebuild my bike - aero drink at the front, spare tub at the rear, etc. Being an oldie, I had time to return to my bike to collect my swim gear and a lone loo stop before the race start. It was slightly cloudy, dry at least and warmer thn of late, but not warm enough for speedos I decided. But I had to wear something I could "breath" in, having decided against wearing full cycling kit.

I managed to spot EJ in support just before our wave set off. With just a few minutes to go, I tied up my Garmin 305 beside the transition mat and started the timer for the first leg.

Swim

The first loop in the lake was interrupted by a few stops to check my bearings, and a few collisions esp. around the buoys. Par for the course, I did not meet many on the long back stretch cos I had swum much wider than I ought to hae - at least I avoided the collisions until the sharp turn back. The 2nd loop seemed faster - probably because I knew where I was going. As on the first loop, I enjoyed the final push to the exit. As I unstrapped my watch from the railing (cost me 10 seconds at least), I could see it showed 46+ minutes including the pre-race delay which meant I was comfortably under 45 minutes and was pleased. The time, I discovered was 42:47. Smile

T1

My excuse for the slow transition (despite no socks and pedals loaded on bike) was having to thread my HRM belt through my one-piece suit. Next time, I ought to swim with this on! 3:38 iwas at least a minute slower than average. Sad

Bike

Sorry, I couldn't find any piccies of me on the bike. Will anyone admit to having one?

On the first lap of the bike, not many people passed me but I couldn't fail to note two riders (#57 & #61) who lapped me - they were 1st & 2nd in the race! ok, they had started 50 minutes earlier! On the long drag (the ripple?), I was cheered on by the tremendous TriTalk team and spotted EJ & Mrs Slacko. I caught up with rider 818 (Jen Aslin from Square Mile Tri) and we jostled back and forth (for the first lap only, before she went out of sight). At times, to relieve the pain in my shoulder, I must have looked a little odd cycling bolt upright going up a few hills. At the 40.5km point, passing lap 1 feed station, I was pleased to be under 1:15 - actually, 1:13:55. Before the end of the first lap, I was pleased to catch Steve_r (TTer) but I think he caught me up on my slow 2nd lap. I had struggled to hold the drink and eat an energy bar without being sick for most of the bike.

On the 2nd lap, I averaged 2.5km/h slower. The wind seemed stronger, the hills tougher (tho spurned on by the TT team support again), legs wearier, but it was my stiff shoulder and a full bladder (too much caffeine in the drink mix) that didn't help me to relax. And I failed to let it go - I need more practice at this before I caan call myself a pro Wink My overall bike time was 2:35:38 - 1:21:43 for the 2nd lap - so, it showed that training for longer might have helped. No doubt helped by the bike, I was impressed being 6th in my age group Very Happy and 200th overall Smile

T2

Less of a delay this time, as I slipped off my shoes just as I reached the dismount and ran barefoot on the grass & mud to my shoes, screaming "Where is the LOOOO?" Socks on before levering into my shoes with the help of a plastic shoehorn from a Christmas cracker! A slight delay as I removed my club top cos it was too hot. Still, I ought to have been 30 seconds faster than 1:54. Sad

Run

Thanks to EJ for this photo!

Now for the test. Did I have enough energy for 13 miles? First of all, the full bladder had to be emptied. Find me a quiet bush fast PLEASE! Crying or Very sad Nearly 2 minutes later (Is 1:45 a WR for the longest pee I wonder?) I discretely re-joined the race and soon caught up with fatirishman (Paul?). I also saw DrDre (?) before and after the long pee, and he remarked who else could it be other than me wearing this black suit with cool aero shark-fin cut-outs. (See u all as superman in the final TT race next month!)

I was impressed when I saw team mate, Richard Evershed on his 2nd lap heading for a sub-5 hour time, tho I had beaten his bike time - as I discovered later Smile Another team mate, Elly seemed to be running steadily as we encouraged each other in passing. TTer, Slacko was running impressively strong and must have been close to optimal HR seeing his face. I saw EJ, Mrs Slacko, mountaingirl & other TTers cheering me on each lleg of the run. I also saw steve_r again gaining on me fast, and team mate, James Simmons whom I reckoned was slightly behind me taking account of his 10-minute earlier start wave. My run pace for the next 7km (after the slow first km) averaged under 5:15 per km and was aiming close to my target of 5 hrs 15 mins for the whole race. I felt ok although passed by a few other J age runners who looked much fresher. However, after 8km (with not enough training!), for the next 5km, I had dipped to 5:55 average. Then, slowing to 6:10 for the penultimate 3km.

I kept cool by pouring watr over me; I enjoyed the slight drizzle towards the end. Great support from the marshalls at the turn for the "sexy suit" I was wearing. On the final turn I saw founder TTer, Paul L again just ahead and aimed to catch him on the final leg. but I also had steve_r just on my tail. In the end, I finishing the final 3km very slowly at 6:50 pace, but held my position between Steve and Paul.

So, I'll be back to do much better than 2:3:32 I hope.

Conclusion

My final time was sub 5.5 hours at least (5:27:32) and I was 11th in my age group (392nd overall). I was just a few minutes ahead of Woody (Ian) who had offered shelter the night before.

Well done Richard E on an excellent run time to finish well under 5 hours, and my congrats to James S who pipped me by just over a minute (and whom I outraced by an hour in IMFR a few months earlier). I console myself that he beat me on the transitions, and on his bike-pee skills (as I discovered on a FB chat a few days later).

Congrats also to club mate, Elly on coming so close to 6 hrs as a Vitruvian. But what happened to IM club mate, Sparkey (Adam) - was he 30 minute late starting the swim? Or accompanying a slower competitor I wonder?

Next year (if I do it instead of Monaco), I must train better to knock 5 minutes off the bike and 15 minutes off the run, and another few minutes off T1 & T2. So, 5:10 is possible if I am fit.

After the race, I grabbed a box of goodies at the end. I struggled back to the car with my bike and congratulated Jen Aslin (#818) on coming 3rd in her age group. I returned wrapped in a car rug for a welcome dose of 2 recovery massages; the second for my trapped nerve in my neck/shoulder/arm whilst cheering the race winners. Only 43 minutes better and I would beat my age group winner.

Returning to the car, I loaded my performance from my watch on to the laptop before having a snooze. I awoke to discover a barren site, void of cars and people. Only the Pirates remained, as I ordered the first BBQ meal - yummy, REAL food! I felt ok as I pinched a few extra pieces of bread (dont like rice anyway).

I headed South to Poole in just over 3 hours (not another race!) to meet my family - my daughter, Keren had returned from her 1-month tour of Europe. It was an emotional re-union. Crying or Very sad

Great race; great company. I'll be back!
