Me

In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a little..how about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

I woke up at 4:45 am and was back to my usual breakfast of porridge and honey. Left home at 5:30 for the drive to Windsor and was in transition by just before 7. I took my time getting ready and was buzzing. I felt good and was ready to have a good race. Wetsuit on and was ready to go. I entered the water as early as possible and it was a little chilly so I warmed up a little, and positioned myself near the front left. At 7:50 the claxon sounded and we were off.

I went quite hard to start but just before I got to the other bank I took a kick to the head in what was an uneventful and relatively small wave start. I took a lungful of dirty Thames river water and coughed into the water. This didnít help, but after that I settled nicely into a good stroke and felt I was swimming strong. I did hug the bank a bit too much though as I had to weave out a few times for a boat and where the river changes direction a little. As I got to the turn I thought I was going well, and turned and headed back in what seemed like a good time. I nearly overshot the exit turn as I was looking at the giant Nokia buoy that was actually 20m past the turn Doh I climbed out of the water and got the wetsuit down well and made my way to T1. I clocked 30:37 which was slower than it felt. Swim time was closer to 29mins though.

As I was running into T1 I started to feel very sick and bloated. I thought it would pass and I exited T1 in a respectable 1:56

I set out on the bike and it was evident there was a strong headwind , and my problems started at the first roundabout as a car decided to run straight through and I had to slam the anchors on , locking up the rear wheel. After this my day just got slowly worse. I carried on but was struggling with stomach cramps and had no power. I tried taking some GO electrolyte on board and threw this straight back up. OK I thought, Iíll go easy and let my stomach settle before trying to push on, but this didnít happen. I tried to take on a gel after about 10k and this reacted badly also, and at this point I realised that it was just not going to be my day. I tried to press on and thought about my first DNF, but I had to get the bike back so kept the ride pretty steady, in fact I was riding slower than I did in Austria to compare the intensities I was riding at. As I got to the turn at drift road I caught up with Ben Laws of Team Laws and gave him and Ewan a shout of encouragement, and it made me think HTFU and get on with it. I started to push but the harder I tried the slower I seemed to go. There was nothing there. I had an angry moment coming through the great park when a peleton of at least 10 riders working together went past. I shouted at one guy ďAre we in the fíkin tour de france now are you just a fíkin cheatĒ...I got a blank stare but I think my attitude showed how low I had got.
As I got to transition I was ready to pull out. I had drunk less than a 1/4 of my aero bottle and had 1 gel...all rejected. My stomach was somersaulting and I was in desperate need of a portaloo....None in transition though....arrgggghhh. I decided that I would start the run anyway. Bike was a poor 1:17 with the ave speed probably less than Austria. T2 was marginally better at 1:21. As I started running I knew that I didnít have any pace so I started out at long run pace and hoped I could settle into my run. I felt fresh due to the slow bike but I kept the first lap steady. The second lap I tried to up the pace but had nothing there. My stomach was churning and my pace was zero. This turned into a long hard slog and I knew I wasnít going to pb the course, and was in real danger of going over 2:50 Shocked I tried on the third lap also to up the pace, more so I could get back to the toilet Wink but my legs were having none of it. Nothing worked. I eventually stumbled across the line with a 10.2k, yes it was long, in a sluggish 56:42 for a poor 2:47:36.

splits

Swim 30:37
T1 1:56
Bike 1:17:00
T2 1:21

MUST DO BETTER.

What a shame. Maybe you still have IMA 70.3 in your legs.

How long ago was the 70.3? Not long as I recall so I'd agree with the above about still having some residual effects in your legs.

I'd guess the stomach shut down can be put on the Thames water - from what you said it doesn't sound like a common problem for you?

Annoying not to get the time you're after though.
