Me

In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a little..how about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

Another week another killer of a XC race. Got to Tonbridge expecting a tough race and wasnt disappointed. Walking to the start I could see the long hill that I'd been warned of!

First up was the girls and we wathched their 5k race before lining up and getting ready for our 10k affair, 1 medium and 3 long laps. the gun went off and it was a straight up the hill and back down to the start before heading off for the rest of the medium lap. This was a great course as not only was it undulating (read f'kin hilly Wink) but there was some real "Cross Country" with some ditches to run down and up and some different surface types, from quite muddy to hard to grass. Very good. I settled as best I could from the start into a steady pace but was still blowing within 500m, but I felt a lot stronger this week. I noticed I was a little further up the field and was manageing to keep control of my HR in as such I wasnt maxing out just well above threshold Wink There was a good long steady uphill, and a very very steep, almost vertical uphill, that was a killer. It was like trying to climb up a 30m river bank. This got very muddy for the other laps as you can imagine!
First lap went and the second started with the course as the medium lap, but afdded another loop with another long uphill of about 4-500m and back down allbeit steeper and shorter to get back down. I was managing to hold position and I must have had 10-15 people behind me so was quite pleased. After the 2nd lap I was tiring quite a bit but teh cheers from the girl Tritons at the end of the lap kept me running, and it wasnt long though before I was getting lapped again. Not good. I struggled on, but was enjoying every minute of it. I managed to turn my ankle on one of the decents into a ditch but it wasnt too bad. The Zinc Oxide tape was stopping the blisters but my feet were still becoming sore due to the spikes, hopefully this is something that will improve with time.

Still got to the end of lap 3 in 40mins so new I was going to struggle to match the previous races time, but it was a much harder course. The heavans then opened up and it started to become quite slippery underfoot. I got to the long hill for the last time and overtook 5 more people and was racing well, then it was up the 30m killer struggle for the last time and I was gapping further and thought my position was going to be great but on the descent I couldnt believe it as all five went flying past me. In hindsight I was overly cautious but it was beginning to get very wet and I was concerned about falling. Must learn to descend for the next race. Mad Still I got to the finish and sprinted for the line to cross in 54:08....20seconds faster than the previous race. I came 144/150 but realised there were a few DNF's and thats why I wasnt as high up the field as it had semeed earlier.
After scutinising the results I beat everyone I did in the last race and I have taken 2 people who beat me last time and got 3mins on 5 others, the 5 who I nearly beat. The winner was only 33mins so a minute down on his time from the previous race and club mates were also in the main a minute or two slower, so I think thats a marked improvement and something to build on.

round three in november is girls only so next race is race 4 in December. Hopefully I'll knock a couple minutes off as its an easier course than this one apparently.
In other news it looks like we may enter a team into the SEAA XC champs at Parliament hill at end of Jan. 15k of very muddy, very hilly hell. Now this is something Im well up for Very Happy

replies

Davey thanks, the club have thought about putting a team into the KF league also, but half the races are a bit of a trott for us so we may not.

Cygnusx, Laughing I would have too Wink

Sue, thanks a good base and Ive improved already.

Iain, the next race round 4 is Swanley. You need to be a member of one of the clubs though as they are not "OPEN" races. Have a look on Rimmers World maybe theres races on there? or come join the tritons!

Sav, thanks, yep I feel pains where I didnt think existed after the race, but already feeling a little stronger. Do you do the SEAA XC race? I think Im gonna need a glow stick to finish that one Wink

BM, tut tut tut tut see you for December hopefully? you'll love it once you start!

Dave, I'm sure this would be right up your street. You're the nutter amongst us Wink
