Me

In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a little..how about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

I got up at 6am for a quick bowl of porridge and honey, mug of tea ready for my mate to pick me up at 6:45. 3 of us were all off at 8:35, although Id have to spend the race playing catch up as one was a national standard swimmer back in the day and the other....is faster Shocked
Arrival at Tonbridge School was something else. For anyone interested in how the other half study, then do a quick search and have a look at their website...Just the mere 10grand a term to go there, and the facilities show that. Pool, proper track Astroturf football and hockey pitches gym with climbing wall. You get the picture!

Anyway we lined up poolside and you are started from the side, so have to walk around to your lane climb in and start swimming. Weird way to start a tri! It was a frustrating 400m yet again being held up, and I climbed out of the pool with 7:25 on the watch, so around a 7:15 swim, but the matt time was 8:11 by the time Id exited the swim centre and got to it. In and out of transition in 55 seconds and then the hard work began. The wind was something else, and with a mild chest infection I was feeling a little wheezy. The 25k bike started badly with two traffic light stops on the high street within the first 500m was more than a little frustrating but soon I turned off onto the country lanes. It was a tough route with plenty of climbing but the biggest problem was the cross winds for me. I had my TT bike and 50mm wheels on and was really struggling to hold the bike in a straight line with more than one brown trouser moment blowing me across the road. Without doubt the strongest winds Id ever ridden in. Without the wind the course would probably be slightly easier than the 7oaks route, but not much, but its virtually a reversal with all the climbing early and a nice 4 mile downhill stretch towards the end. Some of the route overlaps also with the killer shipbourne hill the main similarity with its false flats and false peaks . I wasnít riding too badly considering but the lack of oxygen getting into my lungs made it harder than it should have been. Eventually I got to the first big decent of the day at underhill, which in the winds was too dangerous for my TT bike, I nursed myself down it being blown all over the place ad even got overtaken my an MTB I cruised past n the climb up to it. It was horrible with branches strew across the road and potholes appearing out of nowhere. I lost a lot of time here and it was my biggest problem of the day. We then cruised back onto the main road for what would be a lovely descent that would usually see me hitting 35-40mph on the subtle decline but the head wind made this a real slog and slowed the course times down drastically for the majority. I finally entered transition in 59:17 and after just 51 seconds was out onto the fields for a nice flat 5k run. It was two laps of the field then back up the hill onto the track for 2 laps of the track. I went out at what I thought was a reasonable pace but realised that the first half of the lap was with the tailwind. The second half was a slog, but it was quite enjoyable once out there. I lapped the downhill and first lap in 10:11 which was around 2.2k. I noticed one of my friends in front that I was slowly catching and eventually caught him on the second lap. He tried to stay with me but I soon dropped him and lapped the 2nd lap in 9:28 before climbing back up the hill onto the track for two tough laps. I eventually crossed the line in 24:31 for what was meant to be 5k but I recon was closer to 5.2 or 5.3k. Total time was 1:33:46, not great but as with 7oaks I felt fresh and good after, just lacking any real speed, which could be due to marathon fatigue still kicking around, my bad chest or the fact Iím just slow Wink I beat one friend by a couple minutes in the end with a 1minute quicker bike and about 3 minutes on the run and the other was about 8mins in front of me, and he swam a 6:11 and did 18.5 lengths rather than 16!!!!! considering the climb into the pool and the run to the map thast a sub 5min 400 Shocked

All in all a great race in tough conditions and I felt strong throughout despite everything. Now I have 8weeks of just training before the Forestman. Bring it on!

Swim 8:11
T1 0:55
Bike 59:17
T2 0:51

Is Tonbridge where we did a xc race this year? Sort your swim out ham, I'm beating you at this rate! but maybe just lucky. Andy and I did bike ride on north coast and winds so strong we were grinding downhill too! Your run not bad at all, I'm struggling to get 5:00 pace atm which is a bit demoralising Sad
