In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

It seems like only yesterday I was lining up for last seasonís Cross Country, and here we are again. Difference is it still feels like summer. I was looking forward to testing myself against some skinny runner types and seeing how much better I felt than last year. I didnít race this course last year due to injury but it was closer to a park run than real cross country but it had some ups and downs, and was going to be tough either way. The gun went off and over 180 people sprinted away from the line. It was one short lap then 3 large laps which was measured at 9.75km. The first 500m or so was flat out and i was feeling strong but blowing through my backside. I knew the HR i managed for a half marathon last week so really wanted to test how hard I could go. I again measured a new max this week hitting 194bpm within the first mile. So much for 220-age Wink
I finished the first lap and was running well, holding a couple of club mates within site which was a feat in itself....It was a steady flat section with a couple mini bumps then a small loop and a long drag at about 3-4% that was on a soft, uneven surface. This was sapping rather than tough but you get to the top , do another small loop then go down at about the same percentage but with a couple of vey steep drop offs of a few feet! The second lap came to an end and I was in a small group. My heart was racing and I just kept pushing holding 8min miles on average. Halfway through the 3rd lap (2nd long lap) I got lapped by the top guys including Cedrid our resident Xterra Pro. These guys are seriously quick but I didnít let it affect me and as they were finishing I entered my final lap at 35minutes looking for a sub 50min time which Iíd be very happy with. I pushed on an had a real battle with a couple of guys here but eventually dropped them up the hill. I was conscious of them but pushed hard on the descent to kept them at distance and as I rounded the lake and up the short sharp climb into the finish straight I knew Iíd beat them and sprinted into the finish in 169 / 182 finishers and a great time of 47:54. Checking the results I beat many people that were 3 or so minutes quicker than me last year so thatís also very pleasing. The course measured 5.95miles so 1/4mile short of 10k. But at my average pace thatís a sub 50 XC 10k
This was a painful race and so much fun as XC always is. Roll on the second which is back to the hills and mud of Tonbridge. And I can see how much faster I am this year!
