In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

this week sparked the return to Tonbridge for the toughest course on the circuit. I was expecting a tough race and as last year I wasnt disappointed.

First up was the girls and we watched their 5k race before lining up and getting ready for our 10k affair, 1 medium and 3 long laps. The gun went off and it was a straight up the hill and back down to the start before heading off for the rest of the medium lap. The course is spectacular and "mildly undulating" Wink This is what I call proper XC and not the Park Run type affairs that we sometimes get, with ditches steep banks, different surface types, from mud to firm and grass fields. I went off way to fast though and as the start is straight up a hill I was struggling in the first 200m. I tried to settle on the descent but my quads were feeling tight after a tempo effort on the thursday prior to the race. It was gonna be a long day. I was holding my own for much of the first lap but began to lose touch with the main group, and ended up in my own little world for much of the race. Too quick for those behind and too slow for those gallopping off into the distance. Once lap 1 was over its then a repeat of the medium lap but with an added steady uphill climb of around 500m that is steeper than it looks, and a very steep, almost vertical uphill bank, that was a killer. It was like trying to climb up a 30m river bank. This got a little muddy for the other laps as you can imagine!
After the 2nd lap I was tiring quite a bit and realised my quads were burning and I was losing pace struggling to hold 9min/miles. I was lapped at the start of my third lap which wasnt great and the top guys ran past like they were floating. I thought I was slow, but it turned out they were just very quick this year Shocked

I got to the end of lap 3 in 38mins so knew that the last lap would be a battle to go below 52 but I had nothing left to uo the pace. I got to the finish and sprinted for the line to cross in 53:00 but the official time has me at over a minute quicker than last year. I shoudl ahve eben quicker but I think thursdays run had taken more out of me than it should have coupled with some sleepless nights with a sick child and as has appeared I may have been coming down with manflu also. I finished 182/191 so a better position than last year as well as not all bad. There were a few DNF's as well but they are not reported in XC results... winner went 32minutes Cool Still after 2 races I am 103rd in the standings which is the main focus this year and the team scored well again so looking good for the rest of the season.

round three in november is girls only but hopefully we will be racing the London champs at Parliament hill if I get my act together and get us entered tomorrow! Next league race is race 4 in December.
