Me

In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a little..how about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

188 lined up at the start of the Kent Cross Country Championships, and I placed myself towards the rear with the other Tritons. As the only triathlon club represented we don’t hold out much hope against the runners, but it’s fun and good to see where us part time runners fit in.

The gun went off and we started the 12k consisting of 1 small lap and 4 large laps. The first mini lap was around two school fields and back to the start where the large lap started with the same section. I was in a small group slowly pulling away from the “slow” guys but struggling to hold onto the next group. The large lap then snaked up into the woods with a climb and a couple of big steps before dropping back sown in a few meters down a steep muddy bank. It was a technical piece of single track through the woods and then back out into the school playing fields with a small climb, another steep drop, and a gradual climb for about 200m before running the length of the field again. The turn up another very steep bank was tough after the days activities and the mud, before looping through the final field and back to the start.

I was losing touch with the group at the end of lap 1 but there were 2 Beckenham RC guys and I running together and I just sat in behind them for the next lap. It was lap 2 that I got lapped by the racing snakes literally floating over the fields, but I was concentrating on the job in hand. Trying to hold a couple of 60yr olds Wink On lap 3 it was just a case of hurting and holding on, before hitting the final lap. One of the Beckenham guys had broken away at this point and I had to let him go. I just couldn’t keep up but I exchanged positions twice with the other guy before finally dropping him as we left the woods. I put a last spurt in up the final climb to leave daylight between us and attacked up the bank before sprinting the last 200m for home. I finished in 58:37 and came 179/188. Not bad for me considering, and an enjoyable afternoon’s run. To compare and show the quality of the field, the triton that came 100th will run mid to upper 30's for 10k off the bike Shocked

Tritons came 11/13 beating two athletics clubs so a reasonable performance from the team as well.
