In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

I got up at 6am and ate a bowl of porridge and honey and a cup of coffee and headed off to pick my mate up for a smackdown at Tonbridge School. I had trained well into this race and had 2 previous days off due to outside influences which must have given me just enough rest to feel good.
We arrived, registered and set up before going poolside ready for the 9:05 start. It is a strange format as they start you from the side of the pool and you have to run round to the end climb i, no diving) then without a panic, try and get a good push off. I didnít but settled quite well and apart from passing a guy who patiently waited for me at one end, I had a nice relaxed swim. l climbed out and then its a run outside and up the steps before the mat which I crossed in 7min 26, so a 400 swim at warm up ace in 6:50ish Iíd say. I never ďraceĒ a pool swim as its just not worth the 30 seconds that invariably would be lost getting your baring after. I was through T1 in 1:19 partly due to faffing with my Garmin. But was on the bike and off quite well.
I was a little cold to start as the pool water was like warm soup and I turned up the first climb of the day and seemed to struggle. I was worried I had no legs and as I approached the top and car pulled up in the distance and some guy jumped out. I noticed it was Coach W from the Tritons and he w\s shouting high cadence high cadence push it. It gave me a bit of a kick up the ar$e and I realised I was slacking a bit so dropped a few gears and pushed on. I was going quite well and as I approached Shipbourne for the long hill but I kept it in a higher gear and ground my way through it in record time. I was feeling strong and having passed my mate sometime earlier he later commented I looked very smooth with no body movement at all!
After Shipbourne the course is still undulating but thereís a massive descent at Underhill which I feathered down. Iím ok on a normal descent but this was just too steep and therefore too fast for me on my TT bike. Frankly it scares the living sh!te out of me! After this I realised that I still hadnít been overtaken at all yet. OK so I was off reasonably early, but this was looking good. I went through 10miles and knew I was gonna be quick, and the last 5 miles is reasonably fast.
I finally approached Transition of the undulating 16mile bike leg and looked at the Garmin with a time of 51:27 as I dismounted and knew Iíd gone well. It was some 8 minutes quicker than the previous year, although the conditions were more favourable and I was racing without a marathon in my legs! Still I was feeling good and a better T2 in 0:41 meant I was out onto the flat 5k run. I had the usual leg issue but felt strong and pushed for the first mile going out in 7:25 which I was pleased with but as usual I started to tail off a bit in the middle sector. Still I had noticed that still I was passing everyone and no one was coming past me, and on the run...thatís unheard of. This gave me a boost and I pushed on to go through 2 miles with a relatively poor split of 7:45 so I knuckled down and pushed for the last mile and a bit, I ran up the hill to the track where we entered with 700m to go. I took the lap well going through 3 mile split with a 7:18 and crossing the line having not been overtaken with a 5k pb of 22:38 and it was pretty much accurate also! (3.07miles). My total race time was 1:23:28 over 10minutes up on last year coming 31/306 and 11/73 in the U40 AG I was in the top 25 for swim and bike and top 40% for the run so well pleased with my result. I beat my mate by around 15minutes also and was only 1minute down after the swim. Not bad considering his national standard swim background Very Happy OK thatís 15secs a 100 but even so. It seems my winter consistency and lack of injury this year has paid off!

Swim 7:26
T1 1:19
Bike 51:27
T2 0:41
Run 22:38
Total 1:23:28 31/306 and 11/73 U40 AG
