In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

As soon as I had finished this race last year I knew I wanted to go back and have another go. It was a beautiful rolling course in the Kent countryside. I hadn’t seriously targeted a half marathon but having just come off a good performance at the midnightman, apart from the stomach issues I had on the run, I felt I could go out and hold 8:30 min miles and get a p.b.

Race morning was a damp affair, not biblical like they had in the New Forest, but a lovely southern light drizzle. It was around 12 degrees which was, in my opinion, perfect weather for running. I left it late to line up so as not to get too cold in my club vest and shorts. We was led around to be started by Dame Kelly Holmes again and at 10am the gun went off and we were away.

The first mile is downhill but I deliberately held back this time whilst the crowds thinned out a little. I went through mile one in 8:27 so bang on target. From here the course starts to get tougher and is “undulating”. The second and third miles though were ticked off in 8:38 and 8:22 before we hit mile 4 in 8:34 and the village of Leigh. Again just like last year the entire village came out to support. It was a fantastic atmosphere and this is the point that marks a flatter few miles. Its far from flat but more of a steady gradient rather than the usually Kentish short sharp climbs of the rest of the course. I went through 5 miles feeling very strong in 8:34 again with average HR not going above 160 yet. Maybe I was going too easily?

During the next mile I needed to stop for a pee even though I hadn’t drunk a sip all race which was strange, so the next mile passed in 9:16 but as I turned onto the next section of the course i was still feeling strong, the weather was being kind, and I knew that the pb was already mine. I took a small drink at 6miles but only had a mouthful and carried on. Mile 7 passed in 8:38, but I felt my legs starting to question what I was doing, and I lost a bit of concentration if Im honest. Too busy takign in the views! This mile was only 9mins dead and the only mile that wasnt sub 9 excepting the stops. I realised at this point I was gettign sloppy and it was time to work with only 5 to go. I put some more effort in and my average HR began to rise but only to 162 average, still under threshold pace. Miles 9 and 10 went by in a flash with a second trip through Leigh on the return journey. I was starting to catch people now and was feeling pleased with myself. Still I only went through in 8:52 and 8:36 before the final turn into the last 3 miles retracing our steps over the toughest part of the course. At this point the wind picked up into my face and the rain decided to come down far harder, coupled with the hills made the last section very tough both physically and mentally. Another pee stop, even though I’d taken one sip of water in 10miles, meant that I had a slow 11th in 9:16 but after that I pushed on the hills continuing to make up places and starting to enjoy the run for home. I went through 12 in 8:32 and was now lookign at a sub 1:55. The 13th mile seemed to go on forever and was a consistent climb at around 3 to 5%. It was tough into the driving rain but i went under the 8:30 and turned for the final 200m uphill slog to the finish. I overtook another couple of people here and finally crossed the line in 1:54:17 to come 457/873 a 5:16 pb over last year and a good way to begin my winter runnign season. Next stop cross country in 2 weeks time Cool

1st half 56:37
2nd half 57:40
Total 1:54:17 457/873 finishers
