In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

This week meant the traditional second round visit to Somerhill school, Tonbridge for the toughest course on the circuit. As i drove there in 4c the heavens opened up, and I thought, better put the long spikes in. As I slipped down the hill on arrival I then new I needed the 15mm spikes, reserved for Parliament Hill, and never unleashed this early in the season. It was a wise choice Very Happy

We lined up at 2:30, pretty cold and wet but ready for our 10k, 1 medium and 3 long laps. The gun went off and it was a straight up the hill and back down to the start before heading off for the rest of the medium lap. The course is spectacular and "mildly undulating" Wink This is proper XC at its best. There are ditches, banks and hills...boy are there hills...brutal going up, insane coming back down especially in these conditions. Even my spikes were having problems and there were a few of the men with, shall we say, unwise shoe choices Wink

I went off at a sensible pace for a change, and straight up the first hill... a brute...just to warm you up. 4 times you have to ascend this and it gets longer and steeper each time Wink Problem was going down mean running at 4 minute miles, as you couldn’t stop...It was like a rollercoaster ride , with no harness as you just let the hill take you...and prayed to arrive at the bottom in one piece. There was a short loop that thankfully avoided the main hills on the lap before starting the first full lap. Back up the hill, back down, with many men like Bambi on ice down here. One guy went A over T but was having a good laugh as he got up caked from head to foot in mud. This lap meant the long climb round the back of the course. This is long and hard, and was quite muddy after the days racing had taken place so made it rather more of a slog than usual. I was overtaking some up here we then dip back into the woods and up a bank...its 30m or so and feels almost like a wall. Even with my spikes I was slipping and it wouldn’t have surprised me if people were on all fours climbing this. Down the other side, that was interesting, and I lose places due to descending like a nancy. Well I have got ACL damage and no balance so am a little scared of the possible outcome should I lose my footing! Down and up a ditch, down and up another ditch, over some rough ground, lap 2 done and "The Hill". Here we go again. Now its not funny, this just isn’t normal. “What did you do today?” asked a friend that evening...”I ran up and down dirty great muddy hills for 50minutes, in vest and shorts in 4degrees and p!ssing rain”....”nice” he said “I sat in the pub next to a roaring fire eating a roast dinner and drinking a pint of Guinness” FFS

Well lap 3 was much of the same, and then it got to lap 4 where I thought, s0d this I’m getting cold and need to end this torture. I turned up the pace...slipped, slid, and nearly died on the downhill, almost took out a rival...he disappeared behind me after that, probably scared that his 6ft 5 bloke was gonna kill him if he fell on top of him Shocked I continued and overtook a handful more on the uphill but on the downhill coming back home I lost two places. I tried to keep up, but the more effort i put in the closer to death I came, so thought, I’ll have them when it evens out a bit. I tried to do just that but just couldn’t catch them. I finally rolled home in 49:13 and 145th/182. This is good result for me and 4 minutes quicker than last year in much tougher conditions, coupled with what is high placing for me. Im chuffed and in hindsight, after the pain subsided, I had cracking afternoon of fun. It was the best laugh I’ve had running in my life, and it hurt like hell. I’m still smiling to myself as I can’t remember the last time that I had the excuse to run around and get muddy in the rain. It was like being 12 again.

heres the profile of the course :-

London XC champs at Parliament Hill next on Nov 17th. Now that should be equally good!
