In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

A 5am alarm call and a breakfast of 150 k cals of chia fresca ( 3 tablespoons) with a whole lime and some honey, with a small bowl of porridge and it was time to leave. I arrived at around 6am and soon met up with club mates as this was the club standard distance championships. For me it was just a hard training session as I had already put in 10 hours this week.
I was in the water at 7:10 with the race was ready to kick off at 7:15. the water was a little fresh that's for sure. Luckily I got a chance to swim a bit and warm up and before we knew it the hooter went off. The swim was an easy, clockwise, square course of two laps and with a smallish wave of 50 people there was no biff. I just settled into a nice steady rhythm. It was largely uneventful really and there was a small group of us who seemed to share turns at the front, all be it unintentionally. The only issue was a confusing swim exit. There were 2 blue flags, conveniently placed to look like an exit but the real exit was just around a corner. This did catch a few people out although having raced here twice before I should have known better!
On exit I had a quick look at my watch and saw a 25, which was actually 26:01 in the end due to the run to the timing matt. A touch disappointing really. Transition was a faff as I couldn't get my wetsuit off my legs but I got through it without a panic, unlike the guy next to me, and I was away in 1:26, so not too bad at all really!
The bike started well and it was a 7 lap looped course on the usual bridge tri dual carriageway. A slight decline one way and slight up flat on the way back. Its fast, or should be but half way through the first lap I realised this was going to be a hard day. The downhill was nearly 2 miles into the hardest head wind I think I've ridden into. I was riding at 15-20mph with heart rate maxing out, uphill was much faster hitting 30mph!. Lap one came in at 12 mins and a quick check of the maths meant I wasn't going to be going 1:05 as pre race planning had predicted. As the laps wore on I realised that I wasnt the only one suffering as I was flying past people, and with the odd "freak" exception no one passed me. I eventually rolled into T2 in a time of 1:15:52 and took a look at my watch and thought I'd need a 45min 10k PB to go sub 2:30, on a course that usually is perfect for a p.b. To put into perspective my average speed on the bike was lower than the half IM I did on this course last year, and I was stronger and fitter yesterday!

A quick T2 in 1:05 and I was off and running. It took a while to find my legs, due to the hard bike, and no doubt the large training week. I soon got into my stride though and was running OK for me. Again a pretty uneventful 3 lap affair around the trading estate, but its an enjoyable route for some reason. I eventually realised on the last lap that 2:31 was more likely than 2:29:** but still pushed in the vain hope something may happen, but alas I rolled home with a time of 47:00 dead and a 2:31:26.
this put me in 42nd place overall.

I was a little down with the time, particularly the swim but in hindsight and after reflecting on the results only 2 swimmers hit 20:** and the main bulk were 23-26 on the day so I didn't swim badly and the course must've been a little long. The bike was what it was and a few hit 1:05 but most quick people around 1:10. Richard was 10mins slower than last year and general consensus was the wind cost 10mins give or take, that's how strong it was so I wasn't far out with my pre race prediction given the conditions! to run 47mins flat for 10k off a hard bike with a big training load in me is satisfying, even if I am still pretty slow in comparison. With only 36 going sub 2:30 and the top 2 under 2:10, its wasn't such a bad day out after all!

I wonder where I'm losing all my time!

Now I have 3 weeks until the national champs at Cowman which doubles as our club middle champs and only 5 weeks until an attempt at the midnightman and a sub 13 on the same course almost. Hopefully the wind is more like last years MNM and the previous bridge tri I have done!
