Me

In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a little..how about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

Getting a bit of a regular occurrence now, 3 times they’ve run this half and I have 3 finishes. If I carry on I’ll be the old bloke at the 25year anniversary who started them all Wink It’s a beautiful rolling course in the Kent countryside and less than £20. What’s not to like. As usual I hadn’t targeted the race, just going on residual fitness and seeing where I am at the end of the year. In my 2 previous races Ive gone 1:59:33 and 1:54:17 so was targeting another 5min improvement over the course, but wasn’t convinced this course was as fast as Tunbridge wells that I went 1:46 at for my pb in Feb. I was gonna have a go though.

Race morning was a warmish start at around 17c and a touch humid but otherwise no wind and good running conditions unlike last year. At 10am we were sent on our way!

The first mile is downhill and I ran with a club mate, who was targeting 1:45 and I thought let’s see how long I hold for and suffer. What’s the worst that can happen! Well it was a little over 3 miles Wink I slowed for an aid station but couldn’t get back up to him and that was it, so I settled into my own pace. I was finding it tough as Id gone out way to quick really and by 5miles had a stitch and was questioning my ability. I went through half way in 52:15ish though and surprisingly still on for a pb and sub 1:45 but the course is a bit tougher on the return so I knew I wouldn’t negative split it! I made the decision at the aid station there to walk for a minute, and get some water in me and try and kill the stitch that was slowing me down and this decision was excellent, I was back running and the pace was picking up again.
Coming back through Leigh village gave me a lift at 9 miles ready for the big hills again and I wasn’t going too badly. At 11 miles and the turn down a lane for home I was finding it hard to hold pace, and realised that the pb was doubtful but a course pb and a sub 1:50 was on which was my original “non stretch” goal.
The 13th mile seemed to go on forever and was a consistent climb at around 3%. It was tough but I wasn’t feeling too bad and was looking forward to finishing now. I turned for the final 200m uphill slog to the finish which seems more like a mile Wink . I overtook another couple of people here and didn’t have anything to sprint for home, but didn’t need to as I crossed the line in 1:48:47 for a big course pb of 5:30, a second sub 1:50 over the distance and equally pleasing 317th / 1022 for a top third finish....in a running race Shocked The winner went 1:13 something to give a bit of balance to the difficulty of the course. He was also 2 mins slower, the same as me, as the TW race in Feb.
Average pace 8:17min/mile
average HR 176 max 190

1st half 51:53
2nd half 57:52
Total 1:48:47 317/1022 finishers
