The Purpose

This is what I wrote several years ago: "The plan is to lose a lot of weight and all the negative impact it has (self-esteem etc) and turn a new leaf."

It is now 2009 and I have finally lost the weight (after SEVERAL failed attempts).

I am now running faster than ever before.

Lets see how I progress.. and especially see if I do get any faster.

Training:
Run: 32k E
Stretch/Yoga/Core: 15mins

The run into work was pretty darn solid. Averaged 4:53min/km pace and for 3k near the end I did a 4:35 race pace section. It started lightly snowing towards the end and was a bit colder than I would have preferred but it was dry (even when snowing).

On the downside.. my pace dropped steadily over the run although this is due to
[a] the last couple of km I used to cool down
[b] I was nervous about making the 9am meeting I had planned so started out a bit over eager.

Hang on.. 32k before a 9am meeting?!!!
Yep! I got up at 5am this morning (I have to do a ritual 2 or 3 times visit to the toilet before I start running, and in my old age I seem to have to redo my lacing a gazillion times before I am happy!).
Did I make the meeting? I arrived at 9:01.. and was the second person there (out of 7)!

Compression gear.. gotta love it. I run in wearing linebreak tights and sat in the meeting with skins recovery tights under my jeans. Awesome.

Hang on (for the second time!).. why the sweetest taboo reference in the title?
No reason other than I was listening to that song at the start of this blog!
Hmm.. it could easily have been.. "My Run is King" or "No Ordinary Run"

How are the legs?
Pretty darn good. It is noticeable walking down the stairs that I am not so sprightly, but for the rest of the time I feel fully recovered. Although the meeting went on too long (1.5hrs) so I didn't eat after the run soon enough. My fault.

Looking forward to tomorrow's 3k swim.

@Sue.. they have worked with me for so many years that they know about my compression gear under my jeans! they put it down to the made englishman and his silly sporting habits Smile

Training:
Bike commute via pool: 25k E
Swim: 1k E
Treadmill run: 30mins E
Sauna: 15mins
Bike commute home: 22k E
Stretch/Yoga/Core: 15mins

The bike ride
was deceptively tough due to wind (weather, not me!). But it was magically helped by Arrow Jazz FM! Just discovered this radio station and love it. It might be pretty MOTR and light but it makes me feel happy and summery. Unlike the cooler Radio station I had before (Radio 538) which is better for my Dutch (is very talky) and has the latest songs.. but that station makes me feel more aggressive and less chilled Smile

I tried eating a banana this morning (could only manage to eat half of it though) and I think it help hold off cramping, but the pool swim was only a 1k steady effort so is too early to tell

The treadmill run went well - nice and easy session (11.6kmph). The sauna afterwards (Wednesday is Sauna day in the gym) was a lovely as ever!

Last night's Core Stength/Yoga/Stretching 15min session was great again.. which leads me onto my Title Text...

Am feeling particularly buff today!
I have changed two things in the last 48hrs and I think it has made me feel happier in my body shape; I am happy regardless considering my weight loss, but is a bit frustrating knowing that I will always have excess skin which will prevent a six pack look (and I still have a bit too much spare fat).
So what did I change? Firstly the core strength work. I can't remember the last time I did some ab work and although it is lightweight stuff so far, it has already made a difference I think (I really wasn't expecting it). The second thing is that I trimmed my chest hair! (eeuw!) I don't have a crazy amount of hair and I only trim it, but it really reduces the padding under a shirt!

Of course it is all relative.. I am more buff than Homer Simpson, but Waaaaaay less than Jason Stratham.. hmm.. I am glad to say that I am a lot closer to Jason these days though! Smile

Naturally my buff feeling went all pear shaped as soon as I arrived at the pool and started swimming with a group of 18yr olds that have been swimming 5 days a week since they were 10!

Tomorrow is a big run day.. 32k

Training:
Bike commute via pool: 25k E
Swim: 1.8k E
Treadmill run: 30mins S
Bike commute home: 22k E
Stretch/Yoga/Core: 15mins

The bike ride in was fun

The pool swim went well until 1.5k when I could feel cramp coming on... that meant I lost form at the end and in fact cut the swim short (was planning on 2k but did 1.8k instead). But still, I am thrilled with the way it is going.
Tomorrow I have another 2k swim and this time I will try having a banana in the morning (at the moment I prefer not to eat until after the swim, but a 2hr session is too much without eating)

The treadmill run went well. I was toying with 14.5kmph steady, but in the end did 20mins and then dropped to 12.5 just to make sure I didn't over do it (I have a big 32k run on Thursday).

Last night's Core Stength/Yoga/Stretching 15min session was great.. will do that as a nightly routine as much as possible. The idea is not to really gain anything other than flexibility and a bit more core strength so nothing major at this time.

Training:
Bike commute (+ coastal loop): 42k E
Treadmill run: 30mins S
Bike commute home: 22k E
Stretch/Yoga/Core: 15mins

After the weekend away I was definitely eager to get back into the groove (boy, i had something to prove as Madonna might say). It was a great weekend away but I missed training sessions on Friday and Sunday.

The bike ride in was tougher than planned due to knobbly tyres on my mtb (prepared for snow anyday). But with the sun shining and getting lighter in the mornings, it was a lot of fun.

The treadmill run plan was to do 30mins at 14.5kmph but ended up doing 15mins and then the last 15mins at 12kmph. The problem was than my new hiking boots in the weekend had strained my left foot a bit and didn't want to push it. Instead if foot is fine tomorrow I may do a 30min session then at 14.5kmph.

Tonight I am also going to start doing a bit of stretching and some core strength stuff.. nothing major but more of a 'dipping my toes in the water' thing. I will really build up this evening 'relaxation work' more over the coming months.. the idea is to help develop flexibility and core strength.

Overall?.. happy bunny. and pleased that I am not overly stressed about the missed workouts in the weekend (in the past I would have been depressed if I skipped a weekend like that)

Today's Dutch word.. ijzel

ijzel = black ice.

Being the land that invented the word 'flat', they also do 'ijzel' in style. Black ice usually covers the enter road when it is around. There is no escaping.

So.. today's run (25k run into work) was not so much of a quality run, but one of just trying to stand up. The plan was to do 4:50 pace and mix in a couple of 4:30 k's towards the end, but I quickly decided against that and in the end just did a 23k run at around 5:30 pace.
To be honest that is fine, after last week's awful run it was just nice running well (albeit carefully!)

On the plus side: if it had been a normal day then I would have not taken the bike and caught the train instead, so I got more of a workout than I could have hoped for given the conditions. cool.

I need to move to Hawaii!

This weekend I am off hiking with the wife and kids (and staying in a coooool hostel - http://www.stayokay.com/index.php?pageID=3207&hostelID=356038

It is one of our 'no electronics' weekends. so Finley (6.5) has to do without his DS, and Karin and I need to survive without internet. Maia (3) has to do without... er... her FurReal sheep I suppose!
It is three days away so that is going to affect the training.
Tomorrow I will sneak in a 12k run before we leave, Saturday is a rest day for me anyway, so that just leaves Sunday.. hmm.. might have to sneak in my GPS running watch and escape on a run for an hour.
