|
|
Hello all,
I entered my wife (without her knowing) in the Reading Half which is on the 1st April and we are doing it together. Although she appears to be be in decent shape she is not particularly active and has no running background to speak of!
The problem is we went out for a run together just after the new year and to my horror she struggled to cover 2 miles without walking!!
This massively dented her confidence and has made her put off training. To make matters worse we have both been suffering with a string of colds which have taken ages to shake.
So the crux of my question is... If you had 7 or 8 weeks to train someone for a half marathon pretty much from scratch, how would you approach it?
Cheers for any help!

You will almost certainly be able to use a run walk strategy in that time frame. 5 on 1 off, or 10 on 1 off. Not appealing but it should work and probably wont be that slow. Start by walking the half marathon distance once a week with a bit of running and build up.

That there is some seriously sick ninja skillage!!
As has been said, train for a run/walk and remember, once you get to 80% of race distance in training - you'll be good for the full distance!

This is brilliant. Have you told her yet? How did she react?

I'd agree with the run/walk strategy, you run it , she can walk it

tell her anything less than 1:40 and you'll cut her housekeeping allowance.

I entered her a while ago for a laugh, and it did remain just that a laugh before she went out for her first run and had a bit of a wake up call!
She would have pulled out but has gathered a load of sponsorship for a great local charity, so has no choice!
She has been moaning at me ever since, but I keep reminding her that she will enjoy it in the end!
The time of year does not exactly help motivation either.

This without the walking the half marathon distance once a week. That will take about 4 hours, be freezing cold and miserable.
Just gradually build up distance with running and walking. Don't let her go too quick, as she'll get disillusioned with being out of breath all the time. And quite slow will be too quick.
If you can get up to 10 miles eventually in training (run/walk), the rest will be fine on the day.

I know. I keep saying the same to the wife but she's having none of it.

Reading is a huge event so there are all speeds represented. I'd agree with the run 5 mins, walk 1 and see how that goes in training. Don't log distance, this will make it appear daunting I'm sure.
