I see the massacre of Ahmedabad has started already India win the toss on what looks like will be a good pitch for a couple of days then turn into a spinning minefield. England don't have the balls to pick 2 specialist spinners as Flower doesnt like 5 man bowling attacks so they go with 3 seamers, Swann and Patel as a 2nd spinner. Bowlers like Patel are 2 a penny in India so the Indian batsmen are not going to be scared of him.
Botham and Gower are already talking about England batting to avoid the follow on as the presumption is that at 215-1 that India will get 500+ and England will struggle to get 300
On the plus side it is always entertaining watching Segwag bat when he is in form

Looks like they've picked a batting side with Swann at 10. i suppose we should consider ourselves lucky that they retained Anderson for his bowling...

They'll regret not picking Monty

Ludicrous, isn't it?
Seriously, Prior at 6, Bresnan 7, Swann 8, Broad 9 is more than enough batting to carry Anderson and Panesar. Monty would reduce India's score by more than Patel will increase England's by his batting. Or, if they're desperate to play Patel, he comes in for Bresnan (though I'd play Bresnan as he's a proper bowler...)

Looks like we've been batted out of the win, so can we bat ourselves into a draw?

reckon we'll be short of the follow on but (hopefully) escape with a draw and pick the right bowling attack next time (Bresnan Panesar if pitch is similar)

I'm sooo glad I turned the telly on!
Good to see that Broad at least is in for his batting; let's hope we can do better in the follow-on...

They have done so far though Indian spinners underperformed today. Massive credit to Cook and Prior. I think it will still be all over by tea tomorrow but at least the Indians will have been made to work a bit harder for their win than seemed likely 2 days ago

And that's that. Cook and Prior played really well, shame they didn't get the 200 and 100 respectively) but we were well beaten.
Let's hope the selection is better for the second test; wonder if they're regretting kissing and making up with Kevin..?

So Bell out as flying home for birth of his baby, picking Panesar seems to be a given (1 test too late ), so what other changes would you guys make? Would you resist the temptation to meddle even more with the middle order?
For me:
Cook, Compton, Trott, Pietersen, Morgan, Patel, Prior, Swann, Finn, Anderson, Panesar
Morgan a better player of spin than Bairstow so replaces Bell. Broad is more replaceable than Anderson with Finn coming in as a bit quicker and bouncier. Trott to bowl some medium pace if necessary but really if the spinners are bowling 60overs between them Anderson and Finn only need to bowl 15 each or less if Patel and Pietersen bowling as 3rd and 4th spinners. Patel the victim of bad decisions in this test so keeps his place on the back of good warm up game performances.
India don't need to make any changes but MS Dhoni is the weakest link there.
