Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a couple of practice races for a new triathlete who is working towards IM Wales 2017 please? Very strong runner, reasonable cyclist, improving swimmer. Race date 10/9/17. Have seen Brecon Man (which I did a couple of years ago), which is mid June and at the start of his Build period. Need to find an Oly which is also hilly. Any recommendations please?

Cheers.

Long Course Weekend in Tenby - Particularly Swim and Bike, Run is a different course to IM Wales and very tough so maybe give that a miss or do the half. Full weekend event is probably sold out anyway but you can enter each event separately.

Titan Brecon (Formerly Brecon man) is also good but early as you say

My advice would be to get in as many sea swim races as possible to build confidence in dealing with whatever the conditions may throw at him on the day.

(sighting, swell, currents, motion sickness, jellyfish stings, being swum over at turn buoys, kicked if face, elbowed in face, goggles knocked off, )

Didn't say where in country he is?

If anywhere near south coast VOTWO have a great series of swim events up 3.8k at Boscombe, on Saturday AM's so fit in well with other training.

If you want hills, bike & run there's still a few spots left in the Y Fenni Blaenafon Tri on 14 May, based at Abergavenny South East Wales. Shares part of the route over the Moors with the Brecon man/Titan race. Pool swim of 800m, bike up the Tumble & a run to the top of the Sugar Loaf.

Sounds like you need some sea swimming practice. Is the Gower Triathlon still going too? Anything off Weymouth/Bournemouth during the summer these days?

Oly & longer sea swims seem quite rare these days - it's like people don't want a challenge anymore, or the H&S bother.
