Have fancied this one since hearing about it from a Basque friend a few years ago. Big event, great local support, without the up-itself over-subscribed Mdot aspect. Easy travel via Bilbao and for 2017 a 5-hour jaunt across to the Dordogne on the Monday would be possible for TdF viewing Tues/Weds (9-12 July).

After a few years of hilly IM I'm curious to do a flat fast one. Anyone have personal experience of the Vitoria full or half?

I did the 2012 long course world champs out there which the IM course is based on, lovely place, the lake is stunning, the road surfaces were good, gentle rolling course and the run in the town centre attracts massive crowds. I'd recommend it.

Liking the sound of that; thanks Daz.

30-year old tradition, and 10 years of running in essentially the same form. 2100 athletes in 2015, full and half distances.

I did this in 2015 as a guest of the race as I was writing a piece for triathlete Europe. Beautiful part of the country to hold a race and very well supported by the locals and Spanish as a whole. They love to have UK entrants to the race but generally they are committed to the athlete experience whatever the nationality.
The swim venue is 14 miles from town so racking the day before becomes a recce as you can ride with your gear to it and then get one of the buses back. There are cut offs for racking in 2 locations so need to plan this one well.
On race day they have scores of coaches taking you to the race start so no issues for racers or supporters.
The bike route is picturesque and has a few lumps in it but apart from a small stretch leaving town is pretty good roads. The run course is all over town and very well supported. A lot is through parks and under tree cover which is good if it's hot.
The best bit about a race here, the food and drink, basque cuisine is awesome and the whole experience is one I will be repeating.
