I don't think he won the noble prize for this though. It supposedly blocks the signals to and from the cramping muscles. Fair amount of scientific studies on their website. Not sure how they would stand up to proper scrutiny though - e.g who sponsored the study, controls etc

I agree, the only time I have got cramp is from fatigued muscles of working too hard. Like doing a tough swim set after a tough interval run.

Sounds like the mechanism they are using is proven/sound, but not yet clear how effective it is in preventing or treating exercise induced cramping:

Wonder if it's approved for use in pregnant women for night cramps..?


They tested 22 people with electrically induced cramps. I'll pass on this paper for now.


I posted this paper as a partial counter to their claims, not to support them Smile

Their referenced papers do all support the somewhat eye brow raising notion that orally ingested nerve activators can impact the occurrence of cramps...but it does appear to be true. It's the further step to prove it has a long enough effect on cramping in exercise that's still murky.

I experimented with Pickle juice with reasonable effect.

I have a habit of cramping during fast (for me) marathons.

Pretty much every serious attempt I have had at a fast marathon has resulted in cramping at around 22-26 mile point.

Some of these cramping events have been very severe and painful. Both legs completely locked unable to move, and in severe pain (directly under the 25mile banner at VLM)

So in desperation at the last marathon I did I took a gel bottle filled with Pickle juice round with me. at mile 18 I felt calf twinge's, and a slight pace adjustment cleared this. at mile 22 more serious cramp reared its ugly head.

I broke into a walk and glugged half the bottle. within seconds the cramp cleared. And I resumed running. Mile 24 and the cramps returned, so I finished off the bottle and again the cramp cleared.

I continued to the finish and a big PB.

So was the pickle juice the wonder cure or just coincidence. I have no idea. But its very inexpensive and I will take a bottle with me on my next mara. It can't hurt...unless it makes you sick...which it probably will.

Re SGreg...If it works, go for it ! I just read the label on my jar of gherkins re contents & guess what.,,says it contains mustard seed...!!
