From a diet perspective, I seem to get on well with High5 Gels..... however, I am sick and tired (and rather sticky) from covering my hands, clothing bars, bike, in fact almost everything in gel.

Does anyone have any good advice for a cleaner alternative to gels?

Planet x used to sell the one below for only a few quid. Doesnt show as available now, but similar stuff comes up on the web.

I used to just have it on the stem, which was hidden from the wind by the aero bars.

The other thing I got told by the coaches on a camp earlier in the year was just to mix the gels into your bottles. I know some find that approach too sickly and want some "clean" fluid, but I didnt find high5 gels too bad mixed in. A good shake and they were fine.

+1

I use Go-Gels to make up a drink mix for longer, hotter rides in the summer.

Just empty them all into a standard drink\water bottle, little bit of water to dilute, I do that on middle distance races (if\when I race again Sad ), I actually use Zipvit ones as they have about 50g of carbs in them, so about 1 hours worth.

For the last two IM's, I've done something similar but stuck a hydration bladder down my tri suit, just the bladder mind. Then picked up an odd bottle of water along the way to wash them down, or coke if available.

Liquid calories?

I ate one gel at Pay D'Aix and one at Exmoor.

A few bars or half bars on the bike seem enough, plus the powerade and cola on the run.

Depending on distance, add a bottle cage somewhere. For (normal) IM I use a 500ml bottle with X amount of gels and then just added water.

My setup is now a standard bottle between the arms - easier to replace at stations - and an aero bottle on the downtube with gels. Solids carried in rear pockets or bento bag if needed.

For abnormal IM (e.g. X) gels are no more than minor additions to a solid based food plan anyway.

I'ma fan of Zipfit gels due to calories and cho per gel (204 cal 51 cho) but they are thick. I'm going with one big round bottle at LCW but you need a big bottle with some water added to make them a bit easier to drink.

At Im Wales it will be easier because I can do two bottles with one at special needs. I could do that at LCW technically but not sure where the family will be for hand over and the feed stations are spread a bit weirdly (and I wouldn't know where to stash it anyway).

So plan for LCW is 8 gels in one bottle and a bar in the pocket for bonk emergencies. Water on the BTA but can always take a sports drink refil at a station but I'd rather know the cals I'm taking from labelled product rather than dodgy mixes.

As Chrace/Jeff B - gels into a water bottle, top up with water.

Only challenge is then regulating how often/much you drink if your bottle is not visible (eg rear mounted with hose or the internal hydration systems).

I do middle/long with this system but my bottle is rear mounted with a camelback tube: and in some races I have finished with 1/3 still left, others empty with 30 miles to go....
