After discussion with Physio, have decided to switch from IM Wales to IM Vichy

My knee injury is recovering slowly. Pain while walking is gone, and plan to start running tomorrow, gently building up over next 4 weeks. However, the very hilly run in Wales is probably not a good idea, while Vichy, which is 2 weeks earlier, is dead flat

At the time I will be 2 weeks in of my 3 week Holiday in Northern Spain, and it is just a 5 hour drive from Figueras to Vichy, so actually fits in well

Any thoughts I had about qualifying for Kona are well and truly on hold for another year, although hopeful of sub 11 hours. Recent swim and cycle performances are encouraging for a future attempt at Kona qualifying

Sounds remarkably like my season with a Kona attempt lined up (Bolton), ruined by knee injury leading to changing the race (now Italy) which has no chance of a KQ due to Euro drafting cheats.

I switched as Italy is 8 weeks later so gives more recovery.

Worse for you is that I hear Wales has been given 30 extra KQ slots this year so this really was the year to do it....

Feel your pain...

Really!

That's quite a lot! That really will offer up a good number of extra places in the big AG's ?

A ploy to attract more numbers maybe ?

Still probably way off for me, plus not sure I could even attend the ceremony

Waited as late as I could to make the call - However, if I really went for it in Wales I just know that I will injure myself more, either in training or on the race itself. By switching to Vichy, with no aspirations to qualify, I can focus on my recovery plan over the next 8 weeks, and run to complete rather than run at a fast pace

You won't get any roll-downs at Tenby either though, as it's one of the first Qualifiers for next year - perfect for anyone who does get a slot.

I had no idea Vichy was so close, quicker for me than Bolton. Maybe someday...

Enjoy!

You must be taking an interesting route from Bromley to Bolton then.

Nine hours up the M1 iirc.

Is this your first IM?

It was supposed to be my second. But had to withdraw from first due to injury. I realise that there was almost no hope to qualify straight off, however, it is good to have goals. I have competed at national level in another sport, so I am not completely naive.

Anyway, I am now not putting any pressure on myself other than completing, which is probably where I should have been at the start

Done both.

Vichy is a very fast course. 10.09 on my first IM and I have improved significantly from that.

Best guess is that you'd need to be near 9 hours for KQ. So maybe put that idea on ice for your first IM Smile
