I know this was always one of those underrated-quiet-but-must-do events, but I can't see any discussion on here after 2013, ffs! Wanted to do this for a while and it's looking likely this year; is anyone else in? My plan for this year was to do 'just' halfs, mostly characterful events I've wanted to do for a while. So, I'm doing the big cheese in 3 weeks, Helvellyn 2 weeks later, then TriX half 3 weeks after that. Come October I'll try to make it back up north for Helwith Bridge duathlon. Will be up and down from Cambridge like a yoyo!

I was toying with doing the half but after struggling round a sprint today it might be a bit too soon.

Also think I've got to cover at work as well Sad

I'll see how the next couple of weeks go, I suspect you can enter quite late.

Hey up Andy916

I'm doing exactly the same in terms of those 3 tris that you mention, after not being bothered to wake up early enough for a wet Horwich, yikes.

I love Wensleydale, it's such a friendly low key event, did it last year and it was my first tri in 2007, although surprisingly, I haven't really improved since then, too many pies, beer, biscuits and chocolate, oh and the odd injury here and there.

The fun bit is before the race, cycling from T2 to T1 with wetsuit in bag hanging over your shoulder, a good warm up! Mind you, there is always the other option of working out transport to/from T1/T2.

Great bike this one, and the run is awesome, 6 miles up, 6 miles down, simples.

Views to die for, deffo recommend, but don't tell everyone, shhhhhh....

Ok, I'll keep it quiet Wink

Hoping/planning to move back near the hills in next couple of years. Am from just down the road from you, Mytholmroyd, and do the odd race back there when I can. Fell race from Heptonstall was good craic a few years ago, in aid of church roof and the vicar gave a quick speech just before starting the race, promising it wouldn't be a sermon. There was talk of him running the next year, cassock an all...

Clive, was that you in the tritalk top? I was in white long-sleeved Fusion top, plus blue gilet on the bike, finishing just a couple of places up from the Clive in the Full Cheese results.

Loved the bike ride and run, and the camaraderie of absolutely everyone there. The initial ride to Semerwater T1 was fun, up and down those hills with swim kit backpack, chatting to others.

At the time I couldn't figure out why my swim was so slow. Quite a bit of chop to the first buoy, plus some goggle fogging, but still slow even after that. Only just recovered from a stomach bug, and perhaps somehow that affected my swim more than bike/run. I overheard 14C which sounds about right, I'm skinny and am not the best at keeping warm in the water. Despite neoprene hat and socks I had numb toes for the first half of the bike!

Must get some more cold water practice in the fortnight before Helvellyn; see you there.

Hey Andy

Wow, well spotted, I was close, but not close enough, well done.

I think you were in my distant sights on the run in Andy (your white top stood out and gave me something to aim for!) but I cramp up all the time and have to either slow down and/or stop and stretch every so often Sad I saw you a few times, but then you vanished, am I right in thinking that towards the end you passed the two ladies and also that chap who I nearly got at the end?

Yes TriTalk kit, in fact the only kit I have, hope it lasts out a few more seasons. I found the swim quite difficult as well, always think I'm going to be average, and I always seem to struggle, always a bit of a downer when you can't see anyone in front or around you!! Same as the bike on that nasty draggy Sedbergh road!

Super event although this year there were a couple of times when motorcyclists nearly hit me at super high speed - in the 10 years on and off doing this tri, I've never ever experienced as many (crazy) motorcyclists. Quite worrying.

Thoroughly enjoyed tho and looking forward to Helvellyn.

In my usual panic, I left my socks at the bottom of my swim bag and was very lucky enough to not to have to run without (unlike 2009 ouch!). I think I borrowed them off someone (maybe another Andy, many many thanks to whomever you are).

I've suffered vastus medialis cramp for well over 10 years of tris and endurance running and biking - have tried everything apart from seeing a specialist like Martyn Speight re biomechanical/muscle embalance. The next plan. Despite training at higher intensity, and gallons of isotonic and salt being quite flexible etc etc etc, have always cramped up in that area, I will get it sorted tho now, I've lived with it for too long!

See you in a week and a half and good luck.

Yup, that was me in the white long-sleeved top. It's a bike aero-thing really, but I've started to leave it on for mountain runs when forecast is for cool or cold. I did indeed overtake the 2 ladies together, and the bloke who was run-walking near the finish.

I found the motorbikes pretty bad too. I ride a motorbike myself but I have to say there were some thoughtless riders out there. One oncoming half-way across my side of the road at one point, not good. Also, quite unsettling to have a close pass from a speeding bike fitted with a 100dB aftermarket exhaust. The locals and tourists alike must tire of them.

Clive, are you camping at Glenridding for Helvellyn? We'll be there Sat/Sunday night (blue-grey campervan) and my sports masseur partner might be able to offer advice on your cramping VMO. On electolytes I do nothing special in a race, without penalty, and there's a limit on what you can replace anyway. However I do plenty of hot training (the body adapts to conserve electolytes) and supplement with Magnesium (often forgotten, and frequently lacking in modern diet). The key may lie in specific strengthening exercises around the knee, although surely you'll have done some of that already.

Andy

Re the motorbikes phew I'm pleased that you noticed as well, thought I was becoming a grumpy old man. Deffo worse than ever was - on the drive back home one bike passed a car and was head on with me within about 20ft of my car, really thought I was going to wipe him out Sad

I will look out for you on Sunday Andy, in fact I'll email you. I'm driving up Sunday early AM. Thanks for your kind offer and info.
