http://ukad.org.uk/medications-and-substances/tues/ tells you all you need to know.

For triathlon:
A TUE is required for athletes at the following levels of competition:

1. Athletes in the National Registered Testing Pool (that is, athletes submitting their daily whereabouts to UK Anti-Doping)
2. Athletes in the GB Podium Potential Squad
3. Athletes in the GB Paratriathlon Performance Squad
4. Elite Senior, U23 or Junior athletes competing at any ITU event
5. Elite Senior athletes competing at Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events

TUEs for National level athletes should be submitted to UK Anti-Doping for review. Only in emergency situations (e.g. allergic reaction, exacerbation of asthma, onset of bell's palsy) should treatment begin without TUE approval.

You don't need an advance TUE, just a retroactive one on receipt of an Adverse Analytical Finding. You have 5 days after the notice to apply to UKAD for the TUE. If you are on any Elite squad junior + then you would need an advance TUE.

As per tony's post...

Rules are sport specific, but outside of the above, you would need a retrospective TUE if called for testing for triathlon

not sure where you're competing but at IM Frankfurt/Germany you're meant to declare this beforehand (from the Athlete Guide) otherwise too late and you're a cheating doper!

Doping tests
For all professional athletes, see the regulations of the IRONMAN Pro
Membership. In the case an age group athlete has to go to a doping test and is
taking medicine, please check http://www.nada.de/de/serviceinfos/
downloads/listen. The medical certificate has to be shown prior to the
race. A late filing is not possible (we recommend to store the document in the
white transition bag).

You only declare it if you are pulled for testing.
I am on long term pred (and no it doesn't help my performance, the dosage isn't large enough, ) and have checked this out.

- not tested, you can just ignore it.
- if tested you should declare it. and then you have to apply for a TUE (after the test)

N.B. this is for IM/Challenge events. No idea about olympic distance stuff in the UK

One thing to remember is TUE's are not guaranteed just because a doctor prescribed it to you to treat a genuine condition.

There also has to also be no alternative suitable treatment, and it has to be required - so as it's only an in competition ban, you'd need to show that you couldn't stop a couple days before and start again the day after competition. And why an alternative ADHD treatment couldn't be appropriate (although I suspect they're all banned)

So you will need to ensure that you have talked about this with your doctor and have records to show that and back it up.

Also remember you'll need to ensure that you don't exceed dose, a TUE doesn't give you free reign, detected amounts still need to match expected dose. Particularly with stimulants where the low level you need for treatment would not normally be performance enhancing anyway.

Of course, if you're not actually a pointy end athlete, just having a prescription will almost certainly be fine, and you'd get a TUE as no-one would care enough to spend the money, and even if they did a short ban would not be a big deal in a hobby - just take up knitting.

Oh, and when tested, you list absolutely everything you've taken and absolutely every supplement you might take, regardless of if you think it's banned or not.
