Anyone know if Vichy is looking like a wetsuit swim? Forecast is really hot this week, looking really hot on the day too

Couldn't find anything using google-fu. Being a river though, I wouldn't have thought its temperature would fluctuate like a lake i.e. it would stay cooler longer.

Vichy is the one that was non-wetsuit last year and loads got DQ'd for wearing "illegal kit" right?

EDIT - yes, it was: http://trisutto.com/dqs-ironman-vichy/

France seems to have an odd fixation with swimwear. I have heard numerous stories about people on holiday camps being told they cannot wear baggy trunks, they must be budgy smugglers, and turned away from the pool!

The case above at Vichy should be an embarrassment for the organisers & French federation imho. In Frankfurt 2 years ago, I just wore shorts under my swimskin, and put my bike top on in T1. That was before WTC relaxed the rule about sleeved tops in non-wetsuit swims.

Confusion reigns.

Apparently 24.3 this morning and 25.9 this afternoon. Apparently was only 20 earlier this week and lake changes temp really fast... however, looking at the forecast, unless there is a thunder storm, will be non wetsuit

I saw that info on FB last night. Just make sure you're content with the French by-laws on nws swims!

Looks like a dead cert for non-wetsuit now doesn't it.

My advice would be to not worry about the time loss, as it's inevitable, even if you're a good swimmer it might cost you 3-5 min. I found myself taking the swim very conservatively, wary that it would be very easy to burn matches without the wetsuit. It's NWS for a reason too: it's very hot, so another reason to really take it steady and save your energy for the inevitable slog of the bike & run/walk!

My other advice is not to drink too much, especially on the bike. Not only will it bloat you & reduce your appetite for much needed calories, it's also risky due to hyponatremia (over-dilution of salts). I've suffered from it myself on the run, having to lie down for what felt like a good 30 min in the shade. On the bike, chuck the water over you more than you do in you. I'll see if I can find that salt loss link again.

Looks like they'll decide in the morning whether it's wetsuits or non-wetsuits for the 70.3 race. Mad

Jorgan
Thanks very much for that article; very interesting
I cramped at 15km to go; first time that ever happened to me
Literally on the road trying to stretch it out and my pace never recovered
Was previously thinking I did not take enough salt in
Now I am thinking because it was so hot I drank so much instinctively and thus over drank.....
Or it could just be that I overbiked (which I dont think I did)
All very confusing!
