OK folks here's one for next year. This ironman should be on your CV! Now in it's Fifth Edition (V).

There's nothing not to like, and it's run by those Castles Triathlon people who know what they're doing as their Castles Series is the most popular in the UK! I can only say 'M-Dot like levels of care and organisation' in a fab part of the country (Kent/Sussex border) with a scenic and rewarding course. The bike course in particular is a dream, I love the wooded fast descents through the Forest.

Pre-reg here now for the best price:
http://www.castletriathlonseries.co.uk/news/pre-register-for-the-bastion-2018/

General reg open Fri 15/9/17 (25% discount):
http://www.castletriathlonseries.co.uk/enter-now-2018/

There's decent prize money and prizes if your a Pro or Pointy. I walked off with a trophy and a DryRobe Shocked as V40-49 champ Winner

I heartily second TC's recommendation.

Did it this year and loved it. (Even though I wasn't really long ride fit enough)

Would do it again without hesitation but not booking anything big for next year at moment. (Family requires flexibility next year).

On my repeat list for sure.

I thought about it this year after my season went south in middle. Was put off by the huge entry fee but the discount on general admission that is live today looks pretty reasonable.

I am eyeing IM Lanza and then a HIM in August so not sure I can sustain a season that long next year

Is the bike course the same as the Gauntlet? I did 2 laps of it (ie 90k) about a month ago and nearly cried after the first lap. It's a real toughie.

Almost. At the Ice cream car park at the top of the forest instead of turning left you descend down the other side turnaround and come back up. adds 10miles on 5mile down , 5mile up! 3 laps instead of 2 then. The swim and run are the same course

perhaps there's now another good reason to do the Festival of Endurance next July as the Gauntlet has been chosen as the BTF Middle Distance Champs for next year.

A wise man once said.... Very Happy

If you want to make Ironman a little harder, DO THIS! It's an epic event.

I did it in 2014 and my competitor backpack is still in great nick - unlike some other well-known brands' souvenirs that combust immediately upon arrival at home Smile

More the fact that the water is disgusting...the road surfaces are terrible and frankly dangerous in places and the off road run course is likely begging to sprain ankles..!

the water is typical 'castle lake' shallowish n murky. however for the poorer sw1mmers it means you can put your foot down for a breather almost anywhere.

road surfaces are ok-average, hardly a deal breaker, same for everyone anyhow, its a race not a time trial. the bike course is a proper honey IMHO. love it.

the trail run is well on the tame side of trail, road shoes are fine, its all hard pack. and even if it wasn't, I still don't see whats not to like? Not as harsh as a tarmac munching plod, the variety is great.

the lake is rough but better than the Thames and the Flash. The bike is stunning and the roads typical UK. In fact most of the descents are great. If you think that bad try descending in Pembrokeshire. The run is tame trail. Hilly but certainly not dangerous.

Great race, even if the water was a bit murky (hit one or two submerged things I could not see), and was intending to do it again in 2018, but now have a calendar clash. The cycle is tough, but all the downhills give you the maximum benefit without being wiped out on the brakes at junctions etc. Tough on the run after the bike, but a really lovely off road course. I will be back.
