I was due to run at Luzern at the weekend, however, early on Sunday morning I found out that my cousin had died the previous day. So rather than running a marathon, I ate chocolate, ice cream and pizza, spent the day doing stuff with my kids, and then I had a couple of beers and watched a film.

She was a junior doctor, who loved challenging herself physically, running marathons, cycling across America, climbing mountains. Unfortunately she was also Bipolar, and prone to depression.

Sometimes the most vibrant people, who are so full of life, can suffer from crippling depression without those around being aware

Sorry for your loss mattsurf.

Depression can be hard even for doctors to diagnose at times and it can wreck lives. Sadly our society can see it as a weakness rather than a common issue that needs sensitive care.

My thoughts are with you on this mattsurf.

Ouch, how awful.
Crying or Very sad

Depression is such a horrible thing and still not understood enough by society as a whole. I think things are changing, but still not fast enough to stop tragedies like this.

Sending 'good vibes' your way.

Do you think it might be the other way round? That a lot of people with depression end up being endurance athletes, as a way to cope!

I know when I feel down for whatever reason getting lost in the hills helps immeasurably.

Horrible to hear anyway.
