Hi guys,

just curious after a few chats with fellow athletes and various fitness professionals about ways of enhancing performance and longevity... a number of them seem to advocate the use of DHEA and claim that it's not a banned substance, yet it appears on the list of banned substances on WADA website. (https://www.wada-ama.org/en/content/what-is-prohibited/prohibited-at-all-times/anabolic-agents)

Is there something I haven't understood correctly, but as fas as I can tell this is a NO NO for triathletes.

I understand that it is a naturally occurring substance in the human body and that the levels drop with age, and the argument goes that maintaining the levels at their peak is not a violation to rules.... but is it?

I know that most triathletes never see the dopiing officials in their local sprint tri, nor even at IM races, but what is the moral ground - innocent until proven guilty?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this one.

enjoy the training and racing.

Yes - it’s banned
No - most research (including WADA’s own view on DHEA) points to it being useless (50mg/d trials)
Yes - would suggest less dubious advice sought

This sounds like the older guys justifying taking testosterone supplements because they are just topping up their levels to where they were before.

We all get old, things decline as part of the ageing process and performance will drop off. Obviously this happens at different rate for different people, but we're all dealt different genetic cards and we have to make the most of what we've got.
