|

Has this ever been discussed here? For events still in existence. My votes based on 26 years experience:
Swim
IM Austria
Perranporth Extreme Surf Tri
Bike
IM70.3 St Polten (AUT)
Mondsee Triathlon (AUT)
Run
IM Regensburg (now Challenge)

Interesting idea for a thread. I definitely don't have that level of experience!
Would it help if you were to explain why you think those courses are the "best" in your opinion? Adds some context

IM Austria Swim: just search for it on Youtube, some great videos (particularly in the good-old mass start days). It's a stunning lake, clear water and the canal bit at the end.
Perranporth Swim: well some years it's just f'ing nuts with the surf & subsequent run up the beach
70.3 St Polten Bike: very varied scenery, Autobahn for 20km, then up through vineyards overlooking the Danube, then back down & along the banks of the Danube, up & over a longish steady climb, lovely fast wide descent, into very nice rolling countryside back to the finish. Roads very smooth. Single Lap.
Regensburg Run: nice flat 4-lap course through the old town, then the park, and then along beside the Danube back into old town. Varied, well shaded in the main, nice scenery.

Norseman swim - Jump off the back of a ferry, into a beautiful Fjord with mountains either side, a swim doesn't get any better in my opinion

Portrush sea swim: Swam with a basking shark for company, although the swell was such that you couldn't see anything while swimming. Supporters on the beach got a bit excited though. Was more concerned about the sea sickness from all the buffeting.

Swim: Not sure, IMA sounds good if it's point-to-point? I hate multi-lap. For the same reason I'd probably like Norseman or Celtman.
Bike: Again, not sure. The one I like the best is the X in the Lakes. Hard, yes, but the scenery is stunning all the way (apart from a bit of A road on the west coast). For pure speed it'd be IM CPH, Outlaw or ex-Rubicon/now-Falcon (half) at Newby Hall.
Run: Absolute no-brainer - that's Wasdale X Half when it was run from Wasdale. Single loop with the best scenery the country has to offer, and the course just throws everything at you: Steep ascents/descents, narrow rocky trails, a bit of rock climbing, bouncing over huge boulders, ghyll scrambling, and marshlands. All in 21k, simply stunning.

I have limited experience however, here are mine, so far:
Swim, IM 70.3 Switzerland - beautiful clean lake, clearly marked swim to the middle of the lake and back
Bike: Zug Triathlon (CH), flat, fast on perfect roads (42kph average speed), even if it is 1km short
Bike: New Forest Middle distance, great ride through the New Forest, on surprisingly good roads, rolling course, with no major hills... so long as it is not windy
Run: IM Vichy, flat run, 4 laps, so spectator friendly, varied with run round lake, parks and town... so long as you don't mind the heat

The year I did it was hotter than hell - no shade at all apart from a short section by the airport. It's the only race I've done with a medical tent halfway up the course
On the plus side, there were some great "sights" to be seen on the beach to take your mind off the suffering

Even after the course changes, I think the IM Lanza bike course is hard to beat - it's an epic, single lap course and if anything, I reckon the course changes have made it more difficult.

Let me stop you there. It is widely acknowledged that the hottest events are as follows:
(Surface of the Sun)
Outlaw 2013*
(Mercury)
Frankfurt 2015
Kona most years
Nice when you did it

I see what you've done there Yes, as 'hot' as Kona at 4.46am.... in the night
Outlaw '13 must have been high 20s in the sunlight iirc; so to be fair, actually pretty 'hot' for the UK when you're doing an Iron dist marathon! Frankfurt had >1000 DNFs in 2015 (40 in shade), but not this call-sign
