i have now done 8 races over the past two years using my trusted hybrid cycling machine. can manage 40k in about 80 mins and 20k in half the time(funnily enough).
how much time could i save by making a reasonable investment in a road bike? i basically want to know if the financial outgoing will be rewarded with significantly better times and increased self esteem in T1 given that i am no longer a tri virgin but still have the appearance of a fumbler.
your 40k pace equates to 18.75mph average.. which is very respectable for a MTB/hybrid (with slicks?)
a road bike with tri bars will give you several advantages:
- reduced rolling resistance
- reduced aero drag
- better gearing (ie more appropriate)
- psychological (the most important one!)
- fresher legs for the run!
if you're into geeky theory analyticalcycling.com (or similar) may help quantify the effects.
but i reckon you could easily push that average up to over 20mph which is minimum of 5mins over that distance
