Depends how you've built the muscle mass I suppose. If it's come as part of just a running/cycling/swimming routine it will be tricky to lose without reducing your training; if you're using it your body will maintain it.
If you've been lifting weights etc as well then stop doing that and the "non-triathlon" muscle will go before the fat, which by my understanding is what the body usually likes to hang onto most as it's the "emergency supply!

I've often wondered if doing say 20+ medium/high weight reps per set with a no protein recovery protocol would speed up muscle loss by breaking down and then consciously preventing rebuilding. I was thinking squats etc to target my over-muscled thighs and glutes that do me no favours weight-wise.

Body weight exercises are the way ahead if you want to maintain functional strength and stability, without gaining mass.

If you going to lift, bro, you will bet bigger/heavier.

just don't weight train.

if you look at any top triathlete they all look reasonably lean but not particularly muscular compared to other aerobic sports: runners look stupidly skinny/low% body fat, cyclists (froome/contador/quintana etc) skinny/low% fat, swimmers have larger muscle mass but not particularity lean compared to the runner/cyclists.

if you want to get good at tri you don't need to weight train, unless you're a pro who's using this to supplement your full time training programme.

I need to lose a couple more kilos, and I can tell you, it's not muscle I need to lose. Unless you're a bodybuilder, labourer or some other sporting professional that needs it to function, the chances are muscle is not the issue.

It's my bones isn't it - the damn bones I grew 'cos I didn't spend 30 hours a week in a swimming pool but was instead was listening to House of Pain and Van Halen and jumping around. I'm just big boned...

Unfortunately I'm just a unit. I have more muscle than sense and I have a lot of the latter. I just need to lose all that muscle. Pass the cake while i worry about my extremely large muscles.
