And with discourse even easier . It's great software and I need to take a look at that but the 200usd a month seems like a hurdle if they support and host it as well. That does all depend on the db sizes and traffic though. There are cheaper options but again need to wait on TT to let us know the finer details of the current software

You can self host Discourse and it's free (other than hosting costs). There is a multitude of forum software out there though and that's just one option. I'm suggesting simply starting a new forum from scratch (at tritalk.co.uk) with a permanent archive site.

I can probably host it off the back if one of my sites...I'll take a look in the morning...

Makes sense to give it a fresh start, especially if it can be done without losing the history...

I have hosting if you can't come up with anything EJC.

One upside of starting from scratch is we get to be the 'first' registered users... I always looked in schoolboy awe and envy at those TT'ers whose registered dates were 2003... our Forefathers.... Very Happy Wink

I'd never discuss triathlon stuff or get involved in a Facebook group, I'd be happy to help in some capacity if needed.
I wouldn't like to see it get lost

well, evidently it can be done...however (is there always a however with IT?) it depends on a host of things that i wouldn't even pretend to understand....

i think as previously posted by Hammy, the collective need to agree what type of forum first, what functionality etc...

it looks like a few TTers are already discussing this offline and so i am happy to throw my hat into the ring to help...

JC, Ted, Gus, Jorgan, pm me email addys. There is a nice group forming. If we have decent hosting available that's one issue solved, a location for the archive and one for new site. Would be much easier just to start from scratch with a new forum / user db also. We want to keep it simple so that anyone keen can dip in and help admin. As for post counts, only for those with > 16k posts Wink.

Now there's an interesting task - to remove everyone's 'word association' padding from their thread count and see what the results were Wink

I suspect the threshold then for continuing may have suddenly dropped to >1000.

We'd have to port across user accounts surely, otherwise you lose those who dip in & out occasionally, and newer members who you don't want to aggravate with starting from scratch again.

Can this be done? If not, it's merely exacerbating the (lack of) traffic situation.

Depending on what is decided i.e. the forum software porting usernames/emails and post counts might be possible. Passwords wouldn't be possible so there will always be some friction with people visiting the new forum as at the very minimum a password reset would be required.

As there looks to be some consensus forming I'll get to work on an archiving plan.

I've knocked up a proof of concept with vBulletin. Not sure if yo know much about that TT. Hopefully we can port usernames / post counts. I have sent a test link to those that wanted to help. If the platform is liked , and it's pretty useful as its also a CMS so giving us scope to play about, then we can get to work. Demo only lasts 7 days so decision will need to be quick.
