|
|
The universe has decided it does not want me to train - does anyone else get days like this?
I have three bikes just for training, two virtually identical roadies and the new tri bike. This is partly so that I always have a vehicle I can train on.
On Saturday I put my tri bike in the shop as after hours I can't get the rear brake to function without sticking.
So Sunday I ride my roadie, right? Pump up the tires and the valve blows out into the wide blue yonder.
Hah - two bikes down? I can counter that by swapping in the rear from bike 3, and putting in a two hour base ride.
Still training
Get on the turbo today and something isn't right, the resistance doesn't seem to be increasing the way it used to, there's some noise I can't place. Check the resistance setting, check nothing is rubbing on the drive chain - continue session.
I can smell burning. Maybe burning rubber? Finish the interval, dismount, check it all again - stupidly touch the roller and burn finger tip - still no source for the weird power and the weird noises.
Get back on, up the resistance from 4 to the maximum 10, in 50x11 I should be struggling to get the revs up but I'm only getting 240 at 90-100 rpm. The resistance doesn't seem to change much at all.
Stop in the second interval, burning smell again - unhook the bike, spin the pedals and <BANG>.
My lovely new Scirocco 35. Spoke snapped, loudly.
Normally I 'd take a hammer to the ~#*$ lot and smash it to pieces, but given the whole garage full of kit is unusable, what's the point?

Hmm, a fourth training bike - you may be on to something there...

I just got 3 more bikes this weekend! A folding micro bike just to try it (it's a POS - will be selling quickly), a BMX so I can train with my youngest daughter who is into BMX racing, and a rocker bike so we can both do the rocker bike races they have at most BMX meets.
For me that now makes:
Road bike
Tri bike
29 FS MTB
26 FS MTB
CX bike
Fixie
26 HT MTB
Drop-bar rigid MTB
BMX
Rocker BMX
Micro-bike
Couple of old road/tri bikes that have sentimental value but may have to go as not really that much fun to ride any more.
Also dabble with motorbikes, so:
MX bike
Road-legal MX bike
SuperMoto
Youngest daughter has:
MTB
CX/road bike
Next-size up CX/road bike as it was going cheap.
BMX
Tag-along
Quad-bike
Mini-moto
Older daughter doesn't race but likes riding, so:
MTB commuter
26 FS MTB
Road/Tri bike
Wife just has 1 MTB
Garage is a bit crowded, when you take into account these plus all the spare wheelsets and tyres, tools etc. Seldom stopped by punctures though, as just grab the next available bike and carry on. Gradually converting as many as possible to tubeless or sealant filled as it does help a lot.
5 kayaks live outside in the garden. Wakeboards, water-skis, skis, snowboards, roller skates, ice-skates, climbing kit, power-kites etc. are all over the place. All get used pretty regularly. Really should focus more on one thing!

Tbh, I could do with rationalising my bike collection; my MTB hasn't been used for years (neither has the wife's). I could technically get away with two bikes: TT Bike, and a nice Ti framed (disc) Fondo/Gravel bike for everything else.
Rear brakes on integrated TT bikes can be a total PITA. If it works after a fashion, don't tinker with it!

Am I missing something? Why didnt you just change the tyre/tube?

Swapped the wheel as I needed to get going. I've replaced the valve this morning so I am roadworthy once more...BUT. I think the turbo is out of action <sigh>
I'm guessing the fluid has boiled or something. It's a TACX Boost or something.

It appears to be foaming.

Apparently it's magnetic resistance, so not sure what is foaming up - I've emailed TACX.
No turbo. That really ~#*$ up my TrainerRoad plan.

That must be some sort of record! Am surprised to read that sealant-filled helps, as I find with multiple bikes/wheelsets I don't use each one frequently enough within the 6-12 month period of efficacy you get with sealant.
I like to keep to a set small enough to maintain really well and use frequently, so I have:
TT bike with race and training wheels
Newish road bike
Older road bike with near-identical setup (test mule, training, poor weather etc)
FS mtb, with tubeless tough-tyred and fast/light-tyred wheelsets
Hybrid
Wheels are interchanged but mixture of 10/11-speed and rim-widths complicates things a little.

A glug of anti-freeze thrown in with the sealant keeps it liquid for longer, especially inside tubes. Use a syringe and rubber tube to inject through the valve.

It's nice to know that with 30 bikes, you won't be held back by mechanical issues!

Tacx have turned this around quickly. Emailed them and two hours later they have promised to ship a part from the Netherlands asap.
We shall see...
