I unfortunately came across a post on farcebook

"What does everyone do with their phones then during the event? I want to take some pics as I'm going round to capture the event?"

there was lots of support for it saying you arent causing harm, as long as you finish what does it matter, and negativity to the odd few that stuck their heads above the parapet. Seriously has the sport finally jumped the shark and turned into little more than a "multi sportif"? Is it really just about the tattoo and selfie, full of people just hoping to creep under the cutoff just to call themselves an Ironman to people that dont give a shit. Now I'm not fast, but I do "race" an event in my own way, but is it elitest to actually think that this is a race and you should be aiming to get from A-B in the quickest time you can and be the best you can be rather than messing around taking photos?

Of course it's not a race for the vast majority of entrants, they can do what they want, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it being about a tattoo or a selfie.

Well apart from use of mobile devices being against the rules. Why cant you take selfies in a race...just because you want to. Who cares about everyone else. I'm sure it'll be great coming down that finish shoot about to go sub 10 when someone stops in front of you to take a photo.

I'm sure the Selfie taking athlete won't be going sub 10. If they are then they can take all the selfies they want Very Happy

Personally it annoys me, as do folks who always post pictures of themselves training but hey, each to their own, I just unfollow

but if you don't take photo's of how great you are, how are you supposed to point out to others how much better you are than them?

Only marginally worse than a food photo.

Haha

You're in Ironman Journey too then. Makes me laugh that group.

I agree with you, but I understand the guys and gals who are there just for "the event". As I'm out there for 14hrs, maybe I should too! Taking a selfie does seem a little blasť but at the back of the race half way around the marathon it's not going to get anyone killed.

Mobile devices are not permitted, but what about a good old camera? Nothing to stop that in the rules. Or stopping to pose for your friends/relatives ta the side of the road.

I'm not sure how long the mobile device ban can last. GPS watches already connect to wifi, some even have sim cards? People are going to expect to be trackable, if not to show-off then at least for safety. It's not the mobile device that is the issue, but how it is used.

Hasn't that rule already been relaxed anyway in that you can now carry a mobile device but have to step off the course to use it?

I've upset them a few times Wink

Yep this isnt a you aint worthy if you arent sub 10/11/12 post, we all have a reason for doing the sport. I just find it sad that people cant spend 5 minutes without instagramming a photo of themselves to show how cool they are or that they think a race is a suitable place to do this.

Regardless of how competitive you're going to be, you've signed up for a sporting event. Sporting events have rules, so you should expect to have to follow them. It's a bit arrogant to think that the rules don't apply to you because they tell you that you can't do something that you want to do. Mad

It's not hard is it? I posited to them that helmets don't make cycling safer and they wanted me evicted - not just from the group, but from Facebook altogether! Ha ha.

It does speak volumes about why people are entering the event, especially the ones encouraging him as he'll get away with it.

To be fair, the op is now arranging a gay porn photo shoot halfway round the course.

I took a couple of snaps whilst running a marathon in Kyoto (much more scenic than in the UK!) and barely broke my stride getting the phone out of the bumbag and taking a picture. At best it cost me a few seconds, and I may have even sped up because I was conscious it might have cost me a little time! Point is it doesn't really have to mean compromising your race by stopping and carefully framing a shot etc! They might lose a few seconds and a place or two to their nearest competitors, but unless you're at the pointy end or in slim chance of a PB territory that doesn't matter much!
