Kind of disagree with that one, it's a race, if you want a photo of the place get the open top bus or hire a (insert local politician's name) bike and do it later, use the race as a recce for the best views maybe

Reasons for me not caring:

It's not a race - to get into a limited field race you need to do more than just pay money - so you're not bound by the requirements of actually racing as you didn't deny another racer the place. So I reject that argument - a true argument if you seflied yourself in the middle of the olympics that would be disrespectful.

The rules - I'm obviously more sympathetic to this one, however the LD organisers never enforce the rule about cameras, phones, entertainment devices etc. So I have to assume it's not really a rule, if it is the organisers need to enforce it.

To me, the people with IM tattoos are no different to the people than whinge and moan about being beaten by those with no kids Rolling Eyes Everyone's race situation is different. My old coach has been to Kona 21 times or something stupid like that, covered in tatts and has IM amongst them.

I've had to deal with physical pain, ops and repeated rehab that a lot of folks couldn't handle. I'm no more special one way or the other, I could do 10 IMs and wouldn't get a tatt but don't feel the need to denigrate those that do, be they faster or slower.

I took a couple of snaps whilst running a marathon in Kyoto (much more scenic than in the UK!) and barely broke my stride getting the phone out of the bumbag and taking a picture. At best it cost me a few seconds, and I may have even sped up because I was conscious it might have cost me a little time! Point is it doesn't really have to mean compromising your race by stopping and carefully framing a shot etc! They might lose a few seconds and a place or two to their nearest competitors, but unless you're at the pointy end or in slim chance of a PB territory that doesn't matter much!

I think the issue is not that it might compromise their race, but that the faffing/slowing/stopping may compromise somebody else.

"What does everyone do with their phones then during the event? I want to take some pics as I'm going round to capture the event?"

there was lots of support for it saying you arent causing harm, as long as you finish what does it matter, and negativity to the odd few that stuck their heads above the parapet. Seriously has the sport finally jumped the shark and turned into little more than a "multi sportif"? Is it really just about the tattoo and selfie, full of people just hoping to creep under the cutoff just to call themselves an Ironman to people that dont give a shit. Now I'm not fast, but I do "race" an event in my own way, but is it elitest to actually think that this is a race and you should be aiming to get from A-B in the quickest time you can and be the best you can be rather than messing around taking photos?

Haha

You're in Ironman Journey too then. Makes me laugh that group.

I agree with you, but I understand the guys and gals who are there just for "the event". As I'm out there for 14hrs, maybe I should too! Taking a selfie does seem a little blasť but at the back of the race half way around the marathon it's not going to get anyone killed.

I chose to leave that group due to someone telling a whole load of lies about an event and I was really irritated by some of them!

At the risk of getting shot down in flames, what's wrong with getting an IM tattoo?

I get that it's maybe like getting Nike or something, however, I'm getting the feeling that this post is looking down on people that do get one. I'm sure there's plenty of people with a decent finishing time that have one and I'll bet they've put in the hours.

I'm not on Facebook so don't know what's on the group you're looking at.

Live and let live guys.

It's three questions in one:

What's wrong with having a tattoo?

What's wrong with having an Ironman tattoo?

What's wrong with having a company logo tattoo?

Everyone answers differently, and most struggle to grasp any opinion other than their own and so get quite worked up.

No the OP was about someone stopping mid race taking selfies as if it's one of Jibber Jim's cafe rides. There are a growing number of people that aren't in triathlon for sport but to just do one Ironman (has to be branded as any other long distance race isn't the same) to take a selfie get a tatt and boast rather than enjoying the sport.

Point taken, in for one event and out again.

The way the sport is going, I actually think a "sportif" wave would be quite popular and would solve a lot of problems.

No mass start... just chip timed and start within say a one hour time slot.

You could take part with your mates.

Allow riding in groups.

Strictly "non competitive".

Stop for photos etc.

Maybe say you can't go faster than x hours??

Then, those who want to race would have a smaller field that could be more strictly policed (drafting etc)

I guess you'd have to race on different days though. Sportif one day, race the next.

It's a thought.
