Ironman informed athletes this week that IM Barcelona has had to be shunted forward by one day from Sun 1st October to Sat 30th September due, get this, to a Catalunya independence referendum being called on October 1st! Change in date has also resulted in modification of the bike course - the one minor hill on the loop has gone and it's now just a simple flat 2.5 loop route along the coast.

Lots of predictable anger towards IM on Facebook. Many athletes planning to arrive late Friday and spectators with flights on Saturday with plans in tatters. Not sure how IM could have seen this coming, so moving the date is unavoidable, but the response has been typically straight-faced. Options limited to:

- Race on Saturday
- Transfer to another 2017 race free of charge
- Partial refund in line with Ts&Cs

I'm arriving Wednesday so I'm not impacted, but many are. Seems to me that a full refund and/or 2018 transfer option would have shown a bit more compassion for the likely inconvenience - but this isn't something IM could have reasonably predicted. What do you think?

I understand they can't do anything about it,
But the options they've given people is so badly thought out,
Ironman Barca is the last race of the European calendar, so there isn't any other race around so why not allow the transfer to 2018
There arrogant #@?# who don't respect there paying customer

Doesn't seem that IM could do much about the date change, but you would have thought that they would allow transfers to 2018 events or full refunds. It's not as if they won't get a sell out race even if say 50% of those entered transfer away in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure that there are plenty who would take a slot if they were made available.
