I have a couple of races coming up and looking for all possible free speed Smile

I have never shaved my legs. Looking for some research there seems to be little to support the aero benefits except the Specialized test they did in the "WinTunnel".

The only other test done was the original one by Chester Kyle and a further one done by someone else whose name I forgot. The Kyle and other study found very little benefit, the Spesh study found average of 50 seconds saved on 40km TT

Slowtwitch were quick to thumb their noses at the Spesh study but this mostly because "they didn't believe it" or chose to believe the Kyle study more- without any evidence suggesting either study was more accurate.

When you look into the detail of the Kyle study it wasn't done particularly well. They used a fake lower leg with hair glued to it in a miniature wind tunnel. The Spesh study was done in a wind tunnel especially designed for for bikes with greater accuracy.

I am more inclined to believe the Spesh study but perhaps that is wishful thinking.

I have a good tight fitting suit, aero helmet, deep section wheels, I have got rid of downtube bottles and gone BTA and behind the saddle. My P3 is on its way.

Seems to me that its worth a try? All I have to lose is some funny looks and the wife tutting.

I always said I would never become one of those people who shave their legs but then I said that about spending 5K + on a bike and wearing a Xenomorph style aero helmet Smile

Best of both worlds, get some trip calf guards. It'll cover the hair and provide an aerodynamic benefit, and you won't have to shave your legs and ruin your sex life! Very Happy

Plus if you wear them alongside a visor, while you have an IM branded T-shirt or backpack...people will KNOW you're the real deal

It's not the aero benefits. It's dealing with hairy legs and road rash. It's a road cyclists thing - not a tri thing. Just that tri adopted it thinking it was aero. It's not.

Is it this 15w saving you refer to? If so, the Chewbacca scale will decide how much it will do for you.

https://www.outsideonline.com/1924526/cyclists-shaving-makes-you-faster

That's based on real legs (Jesse Thomas) rather than the fake legs in the Kyle study.

Still, I wouldn't do it. But I guess a calf guard would do a large part of the job.

No wonder the UK is going to hell in a handbasket.

Shave your legs if you want to but don't try and kid anyone you're doing it to improve anything. You're doing it because you like doing it and there's nothing wrong with that.

Apart from you officially joining the metrosexual hip generations of self-obsessed snowflakes Wink

If you want to get the real gainz (sic) you need to make sure you don't shave all your legs just little circles like a golf ball pattern.
