I've been looking at some Tri clubs in my area near Richmond Park, two specifically, Thames Turbo and Full on Tri. I have been a member of a cycling club for 10 years and want to get back in Triathlons I did in mid 90's to late 90's
and to my amazement, for example to be member of Thames Turbo they charge 275 a year or 25 a month. I pay 85% less than that for 1 year at my cycling club and that includes weekend and mid week organised rides. I haven't checked full on Tri or others for prices, but is this what you pay to join Triathlon club? I'm having second thoughts now and maybe just join a running club and train in the pool. And lastly what to you get for 275?

It's pool time... That is what you get.

And in Thames Turbo case, maybe a sense of superiority... but that just be my biases coming out Wink

Yeah, they all cost ten times a running club or bike club - one reason I didn't join one last year.

If the pool work is near you, and you will attend, and you don't already have membership at a pool, and you want to improve your swimming, then maybe a tri club is financially smart.

Not all London tri clubs are that expensive

Maybe a bit far from you but Hillingdon Triathletes are only 20 per year, swim sessions cost extra.

Serpentine Runners have a tri club and is 30 per year (again swim sessions cost extra)

Same as what Doug says. Clapham Chasers are about 23 per year if you don't go for the English Athletics option. But sessions requiring external services are extra.

Track we pay for the entry (4.40 at Battersea Park) , and swim sessions are 5 coached (less if no coach).

That's it. Other runs and rides are free. And for some big races lots have entered the club will even put on transport for us.

Thames Turbo full membership includes swimming twice a week at no extra cost (plus other training sessions like turbo I think).
If you swim regularly it can work out quite a lot less expensive than pay as you go.

Thanks for all your comments and some suggestions. Pool time, forget it, I'm not paying 275 for pool lessons! I'll look around but Serpentine looks a good option as I know some friends who run as serpentine members. I'll ask them.

Cheers.

5 coached and 1 coach led session per week...or 1.05 per coached session...absolute bargain...

exactly, when you think my sons swimming club works out at 90 a month for top squad (10 sessions a week), 40 for masters (4 swims a week) and the in between squads work out 65-85 a month dependant on squad. For the bike club it may only be 25 a year but Herne Hill its 7 a session (once a week) and lee valley is 15-20 (not so regular).
When I looked into a proper development tri squad we'd be looking at around 100 a month to cover costs and that's with minimal payment to the coaching team, certainly what we should be charging for our time. The only reason prices drop is when a club has 250 members and only a core of 30 turning up to sessions, essentially being subsidised by others annual fees
