Looks like I'll be spending a day a week in Southampton which looks like a nightmare travel, estimating six hours.

Are there any good pools, lakes or run routes worth doing around those parts?

Southampton itself is not so nice, and sea front is pretty inaccessible due to cruise terminal and port, however, 5 miles away, Hamble is a completely different story and is great for running, another good location for swimming and running is Lee on Solent or Hill Head - miles of sea front for running, and swimming in the sea should be OK for a couple of months.

Head West and you are into the New Forest, with great cycle rides.

Next to Southampton, Eastleigh has a good swimming lake.

Where in Southampton are you going to be?

I work in Southampton and live in Winchester. A naked supermodel with a bag of blow in one hand, money in the other and draped over a Ferrari covered in Haribo couldn't make me swap those two things around.

It's a sh1t3hole.

The lake at Eastleigh is a great facility though and walkable from the train (just).

I'll be slap bang in the centre. Was hoping to either drive in early and run before work, or swim after work, to avoid M25 traffic. Looks like two hour drive each way when it's clear, three or four at the worst times.

Depending what you mean by 'slap bang in the middle' it could a while just getting in and out. I work in the square where the grubberment buildings are. Thankfully just for one more week.
