My 12 year old keen runner wants a GPS watch to track his runs but also one that acts as a watch so is "on" all the time to tell the time with a decent battery life. I've got the Fenix 5 but that is WAY WAY out of his budget (since I'm paying!) so looking for something similar but around the 100-150 mark if that exists...new or second hand market. Thanks!

I'd say the FR30 (announced today, see DCR) would probably fit the bill, based on what you described. Cheaper, includes optical HR, and looks more like a proper watch.

DCR rates the Suunto Spartan Trainer too :

The FR35 has a few more toys like interval mode and being a year old can probably be bought for close to the same price.

The you have the FR235 for not much more, that is a full on running watch he can 'grow' into.

This assumes staying on the Garmin ecosystem. If he wants to break away then Polar and Suunto typically offer more features for the same money. Garmin rely on the history people have built up in their ecosystem to maintain loyalty.

I saw a secondhand 910xt for 65 recently. You should be able to get a well looked after Garmin running something-something with long battery life for sub-100?

but they don't work as regular watches, you need the fitness tracker side of things, so vivosport or 30 as suggested here, personally I'd go for the vivosport as it's got the newer HR sensor so does genuine 24/7, but either would be fine.

As you say, without the fitness tracker side of things, there's loads of 2nd hand options.

Had a FR30 for a few months now, all good and would do the job.
