You're paying handsomely for the Mark Allen reputation, no doubt. |
$1500 for Matt Dixon. Granted, probably less generic, but still...$$$

A lot of food for thought here......
I think it was ttowel who said you have to accept that your coach knows more than you do.... I've no doubt they all do... but one who knows more about you and how you perform must be a huge training asset.
I guess that only comes with time, trust, results and a good dose of trial and error.
There are none local to me I have heard of. |
That was a comment made about myself, that I'd have to find someone who had more knowledge of where I was able to improve than I did, otherwise I'd have tried it out. I've not found one yet that has all elements in swim/bike/run so a coach can be as much of a guide and manager as they are an educator. Personality and frequency of contact is king here.
What is important is that the coach is willing to get to know you more and understand you better than you know yourself. For example, convincing someone that they CAN run a 2.59 marathon or can hold a power on the bike is far more powerful than any training session can be. Coaching is more and more about overcoming the doubt and anxiety, developing confidence and mental strength than just following a cut and pasted plan.

We're all very different. Hence this thread interested me.
130 on a bike would see people running past me!
Was that a pb on Sunday? |
Oh, no... It was a bit of a fast training run. Back end of my season ruined with crashes at ADH and IM Wales, dislocated shoulder, broken ribs and lots of pain so was just happy to be able to run a marathon again.
You enjoy them a lot more when not trying to race or chase a time.

"Who's it for?" he should have just put 'wealthy people' when he's asking $18k a year. I wonder how many he takes a year on this program, and whether he hits that limit.
But yeah, I'd imagine it's a bit less generic

Seeing as you get unlimited interactions with him for the fee, I would expect him to tuck me in at night, and act as my personal alarm clock every morning for that kind of money.
Insane if any amateur actually pays that.

I'm thinking a bedtime story via Skype as a minimum.

How can a coach, no matter how fast he is, and his previous palmares, I was there at the Ultrafit..... you pipped me by 5? Mins.... That's a lot folks, know you better than you know yourself?
I can really relate to the Marathon time/ watts thing.
Last time I spoke to you at Oulton Park you said you were running home?!?
Rugby?!
Glad the training run went well and even glader you described it as fast!

Quite easily when it comes to predicting race times, knowing what shape their in, playing down obstacles, predicting peaks and troughs.
Often seen when returning to training after racing, open water fears, setting goals for 10k races, swim tests etc.

How many people do you coach?
Do you enjoy it?
What % improvement do your athletes gain?
Ish?

1) Enough to make it a viable occupation. Big drop in income from deputy head, but you either increase your means or live to your means.
2) Best decision I ever made, love it.
3) Impossible to say, First timers, semi pros, non runners to london GFA, GFA to champs, Ironman AG winners, National champs winners, IM improvements of 2 hours, but how long is a piece of string. I'm the first to say to someone if its not working.

And for some, there is no improvement but being able to maintain on doing a lot less is just as successful
