Not guilty. I'd be astounded if it was someone that frequents TT; purely because hardly anyone does these days (at least as a poster).

I would love to go to Kona, however, only interested if I can qualify. Going through a lottery place wouldn't feel right

10:1 says if you won the lottery you wouldn't turn it down though Very Happy

I was thinking about this when I saw this reported the other day.

I would definitely go. It would be a once in a lifetime experience as the chances of me ever qualifying are virtually zero (short of outliving everyone else) The chance to be involved in the original (accepting it has changed over the years) Ironman and all the history that goes with it would just be too good to turn down.

I would have the same feelings about not having earnt it but the main thing that swayed me was the belief that the place wouldn't go to anyone any more deserving anyway. The qualification slots are allocated race by race well in advance so if I were to turn it down on principle it would more than likely just go to another person in the same situation.

One of those is a friend of a guy I coach. They had entered IM Barcelona for 2018 and are now re-considering their plans

That is slightly silly. Given that's a qualifying race for 2019, if they drew someone registered for that race they should really allow them to defer the Kona slot, or switch to a different race from Barca for free.

That would be a real kick on the nuts. Yes you get to do Kona, but not only does that cost an absolute fortune, to be able to do so you have to bin off the cost of entry you've already sunk into Barca, along with all the flights and accommodation that are potentially already paid for as well!

One of them is a mate of mine, and we were on a ski lift in Austria when the email came through.
He's going and I don't blame him, all this crap about not going because you haven't earned lol. Very Happy

?
If you enter the lottery I guess you know your going without qualifying...?!

Personally I would feel a proper fake amongst hundreds who had qualified and your one of the few who used luck and money.

Not a chance I would do that but each to there own.

Come on naysayers.

It's a lottery. As the name says - voluntarily entered, lucky enough to win.

So when you win the jackpot on the money lottery are you going to say you'll never travel first class because you don't feel right sitting in amongst other millionaires because you "didn't earn it."

Get off your high horse.

Rant for the day done Rolling Eyes

Ah, but there's the rub...I'd need to win the IM lottery for the slot and the National Lottery for the funds to be able to pay for the trip...

You didn't have to enter a lottery this time: you were automatically entered when you registered for an IM event.

If I won it I'd be off like a shot to Kona: qualifying the usual way is simply not going to happen for 99% of AGers.

I wonder how many club golfers would turn down the chance of teeing off at St Andrews in The Open if for whatever reason a free lottery place was offered?

Fake would be if you cheated to get there?
