Good evening everyone,

My name is Daniel Giles and I am a PhD student at Loughborough University. I am currently conducting research that aims to explore the geographies of triathlon in Great Britain, the characteristics of the triathlon community, and the role of socially orientated digital technologies (such as Strava) in triathletes everyday practices.

I am looking for triathletes, of all abilities, to fill out an online survey about your triathlon practices and experiences. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes, but will be entirely focused on triathlon, and therefore should be more interesting than your standard survey!

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who is willing to take a small bit of their time to help contribute to some exciting university research on everyone's favourite sport!

Link to the survey here - Triathlon Survey

Many thanks and best wishes,
Daniel

I started then baled out after a few pages.

I'm afraid I've been sat on my fat @rse for the last 18 months taking a break so my answers would have ended up skewing the results unfairly.

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey so far!

Some of you have been asking why the focus on Strava specifically, so I wanted to clear that up. For my research I am hoping to explore the ways that increasingly popular social activity recording platforms like Strava are changing the how and where people train, the impact this has on their social life and the triathlon community as a whole, and exploring the links between physical and digital representations and experiences of different spaces. There are a whole range of really great platforms, as some of you have mentioned, but for the purpose of my research I have had to limit that to a similar platform, and I have chosen Strava due to its popularity, a number of its successful functions (like segements), and because of how it appears to have become an important feature of triathlon and other endurance activities culture - Although that assumption could be completely wrong!

Another point people have mentioned is that in return for completing the survey and really helping me out, they would like something in return, for example a summary of the survey results. I think this is fair, and a good idea, so I am planning to post a summary of the results when I close the survey!

Thanks again for all your help. Please feel free to send this to other triathletes if you have any contacts Smile

I would beware of sample bias.

The vast majority of citizens don’t use IT much, internet research can provide an echo room. People on this forum are by definition inclined to It use. Most triathletes I meet in competition couldn’t give a #@?# about Strava.

Secondly, social media based companies love to claim successes they are associated with, rather than the cause of.

difficult subject, research... have to ensure a good sample of people across teh board and probably talk to the less tech savvy people at races. Or at least enruse all points are covered in methodology section of the paper..

best of luck with your PHD.
