After a break from Triathlons (only did a sprint last year and was terrible) I have decided to come back to the fold and entered the half distance event in Mallorca.

The location and time of the year looks perfect as the family can join me after the event for a week on holiday as it is school holidays.

Anyone else done it?

I watched it last year. Seemed very well organised. Fantastic entertainment, including a great band so the family had a good time. Loved swimming in the sea. The run was quite hot, I think my watch said 34 degrees at some stage. Looking forward to doing it this year.

Hopefully a different experience than Bolton in 2013 when my family were not too impressed waiting for me to finish in the torrential rain..

It rained so hard, you could only see a few metres in front of you at times...

Yes, it should be a bit different. Just make sure that they are not scared by fireworks, devils and loud music:

Iím entered. Staying pretty much in the bay, probably take my road bike for this as it looks pretty much up down up down.

Barely trained all year due to a few family issues so just getting back on the horse now. Lost 3kg though so heading in the right direction but lost 15% of my FTP so need to get working hard.

Well I did it on almost no training.

Heavy thunderstorms meant that there was no band / night of fire on Thursday, so sat in a bar. And they were very, very heavy. Friday I went to Palma and sat in a bar when there were thunderstorms. But Saturday turned out fine and after the presentations the devils came out and scared people with fire, flares and fireworks.

Race wise, it was all very well organised. Swim was flat for the first 10 mins but after that it got a bit wavy. I had no idea where I was going as I couldn't see the buoys 900m away when I was swimming. My wave was towards the end and so I just followed feet. Same on the way back. No drama.

The bike was fine. Two laps with a good chunk of the first 15k on each uphill. With little training the world and their dog overtook me on that first lap. On the second lap I actually overtook a handful of people. The aid stations only gave out small bottles half filled with water.

The run warmed up nicely. I was expecting around 25C, although running along the sea front on the third and fourth laps felt a lot warmer because of the sun. Someone later told me the pharmcy sign said 29C. At one stage the seafront aid station ran out of water. The aid stations are pretty close together so it wasn't a problem (three on a 5k lap). And I saw the volunteers carry lots of bottles of water to it so it may have just been for a few minutes, I don't know.

I ran the first two laps but the lack of training meant I walked good chunks of the next two. My time was way better than I expected bearing in mind the lack of training (and 40 minutes quicker than what I had told my family). But the reality is that I should have trained. Winging it only goes so far.
