I've used SIS Electrolyte in the past but run out. Do I buy more, get something else or make my own?

Does anyone on here make their own sports/electrolyte drinks? If so, do you just use caster sugar/fruit juice or get something specific like maltodextrin? I get for the electrolyte part its just add some salt. Recipes please.

If I am Ironman Racing I use the Sponsored Brand.

A marketers dream me! But really I do feel the need to get used to whatever will be on the course. I have had poor experiences not doing this and never an issue if I have. That's Very small sample rate though.

Otherwise it is just Squash for short rides/turbo
Nuun for longer rides
High 5 (cheap) for very long rides

Never Water only ....It just tastes awful in a well used plastic bottle...

Depends on the ride. Road ride is usually water or NUUN, depending. Road race is usually some energy drink of whatever I have around.

LD tri, concentrated Zipvit gels on down tube bottle and BTA water for throw downs.

Squash, or if more than 3hrs I might put 45g maltodexterin & 15g fructose (both bought in bulk from MyProtein) flavoured with squash or one of those fizzy electrolyte tabs.

Up to an hour just sugar free cordial.

Over an hour make my own energy drink as follows, 1L water, 70g sugar and half a teaspoon of salt, plus a splash of cordial for taste. I measured everything the first time but now just do it by eye.

Water.

Although Iím currently unsure if thatís the best thing, I rarely ride outdoors with a drink...or at all in fact.

Iím drinking water on the turbo to try to change my race day habits. If itís over ninety minutes Iíll bring an apple, banana or something with sugar.

Ditto.

I use Robinsons no-sugar-added squash - just enough so that you don't taste the plastic of the bottle.

This link from jibberjim is probably what you want to have a read through.

I use Nectar Hydro red berry tablets for most of it. On the turbo just water.

The tablets are basically just to give some taste. Not sure about all the electrolyte stuff, might be true since I'm sure some of these clever people know a lot more than me, but the berry taste gives a difference from just water. I never use calories in the bottles to ensure I don't stop drinking even if stomach is refusing food.

But reason for using it on most rides is that I am then sure it'll work on race day. I mostly do long distance stuff so tablets are by far the easiest to bring - a small freezer bag with 6 tablets can fit in the toolkit and will do 6 bottles, which starting with 2 full bottles equates to 8-10 hours on the bike depending on weather.

If I was doing shorter (e.g. sprint/oly/half) then I'd experiment with liquid fueling but it's not worth the risk for my preferred events.
