|
|
Anyone have any ideas on how to save an old PX101 wheel with a damaged hub.
The problem is the end of one spline of the (american classic) shimano 9/10spd freehub has broken off. Freehub not looking v healthy anyway.
Now at the point where I can't screw on the cassette, it keeps coming loose.
Been to a couple of reputable bike shops and of course they say to contact PX and American Classic. PX just told me they won;t touch it because it's not one of their hubs. Can't get through to American Classic yet but the hubs on the internet are going for £200!
Rather than ditch the wheel - are there are other ways of fixing such a small issue - eg getting an ironmongers to solder it? Or are the risks to high?
Cheers
D

You'd probably only need a freehub, which if you can get will be less than that, or just put in an entirely new hub and rebuild. To identify the hub, identify which ameican classic hub it is and then find the freehub, it's probably the 15mm version of this https://winstanleysbikes.co.uk/american-classic-9-10-speed-shimano-sram-cassette-freehub-body but should be easy to make sure if you identify it.
You probably in theory could fix the splines, it's not something I'd necessarily want to do as sudden spinning of the pedals under load is quite a nasty accident (imagine sprinting out of a corner or on a steep hill when your pedals certainly spin, you're going down hard)

I'd source a new hub and get in built up with that. There should be loads of options out there for under £200. 24h?
You can get a DT Swiss 350 rear for 125.99 on CRC, and there are a lot of other cheaper options.
