i think i've answered this question before...
but i think you are hard pushed to beat the Norseman swim and run... not raced, but crewed...
i will have a think about the races done...possibly IM Austria swim; LD duathlon Barcis (Dolomites) bike or Richmond, Virginia; PM Zofingen run...

Definitely agree about the swim at Klagenfurt, the Lendkanal is something else. Would also add...
Swim - Escape From Alcatraz
So if you're lucky enough to get picked in the lottery, agonise for about 10 seconds about the cost then say sod it and just book your flights. On raceday, dive/jump/flop off the San Francisco Belle into the "brackish" waters of the Bay next to Alcatraz Island... breathe left - there's the Bay Bridge, breathe right - there's the Golden Gate Bridge... decide to keep breathing right ... do some seal spotting... and most importantly, avoid getting swept out into the Pacific by judging the 5 knot side-on current whilst covering the 2.4km to the Marina.
Proper life moment.

Will need to think a bit harder but a combination of,
Zurich 70.3 - swim\bike, run wasn't great
Alpe d'Huez, swim\bike
Helvellyn, Swim, run
Half brutal, run
Bit of a theme going here, also might include bits of the slateman and sandman, emjoyed the run on bot of them
For overall experience it would probably have to be Roth

It's fine if you've done Wensleydale as a warm-up (hoho) a couple of weeks beforehand.
Wastwater is a candidate for the coldest swim, the first year TriX was run - even though it was only half distance because of the temperature, it was a couple of hours on the bike before my toes full regained feeling!
I'd say Wasdale X is right up there for best of all 3 disciplines, all the more so since it was a one-off (subsequent X's have been based in Ambleside).
Bike course of Evergreen 226 is spectacular - Lac de Montriond, just north of Morzine, through Haute-Savoie and Savoie including Col de la Colombière to Chamonix, 181km and 5000m ascent. I think they've made it slightly longer/hillier since then (in 2016 it was the greatest ascent of any iron-distance race).

Good thread.
For me:
Home: Swanage. Beach swim, hills, castles, fast bike, interesting run.
Away: Alpe de Huez Long course. Beautiful swim. Stunning & tough bike. Run around the ski resort.

In a tight fitting tri suit? That sounds like a disturbing sight for the spectators...

Swim - Norseman
Unbeatable experience with the ferry trip & jump. Then the anticipation in the darkness and gradual reveal of the spectacular surroundings as day breaks.
Honorable mention to Helvellyn and A Day in the Lakes - Ullswater is a beautiful lake
Bike - HIMUK Llanberis
My first love on the bike, packed with beauty, most notably the ride up the Ogwen valley and the spectacular climb out of Nant Gwynant.
Norseman a close second, the first climb is out of this world, along with the trip over the Hardangervidda
Run - Helvellyn
The perfect run, off road and about as spectacular as 8 miles is ever going to get

Yes, that swim at Helvellyn is freezing, especially about halfway round when the water temp drops by about 2c for about 100 metres, feels warm after that. Mostly like it because of the scenery, although the occaisional taste of diesel from the steamers isn't that pleasant.

I did the Castle Howard tri today, swim was the absolute worst swim I've ever done, lots of reasons.
On the flip side the run was quite nice leading up to the castle.

Really?
Don't like a tiny start area? Don't like mixing up your freestyle with weed pulling? Don't like wading through mud (and what else) on the way out? Don't like having a silly long swim-to-T1 uphill run on a dubious surface?
Can't see why on earth you'd think it's that bad. And it's cheap! (*)
(*) Not.

Best Swim - I don't have one, I just get through the swim to get onto the bits I enjoy!
Best Bike - Personally I love the 70.3 Mallorca bike course. Its got a great mix of flat, fast sections along with a real climb that can spread the field out and a technical descent that really finds out those on bikes who cant go round corners. All of this on stunning smooth roads.
That said, in the rain a few years ago it was a bloody nightmare!
Best Run - Oddly, I really love the run at the old Mylor Tri in Cornwall. Pretty, challenging and for me, short - which is good!

Ha, I did Austria in 2009 too; completely over-cooked lap 1 on the bike and fell apart from there. I managed to shuffle until about 20km on the run, then it was portaloo hopping for there on. That thunderstorm was interesting - then the sun came blazing out again and it was like running in a steam-bath! Spent 2h in the medical tent & 3 IVs
...then I did Frankfurt in 2015 and 2009 felt like a walk in the park! At least I paced myself & avoided the medical facilities, thanks to my experience in 2009.
Austria is a really good IM - the only one I've done twice. Great course & easy logistics once there.
