Yeah I agree, I kind of have an irrational hatred of him, and it's not deserved, but just hate to think how happy they would all be and how funny it is everytime he loses, If it wasn't for this ST fanboy crap I would probably really like the guy Laughing

Helmet doesn't fit and arms look dirty.

Also, does Lionel do all of his training in his shed?
He might need those timbers damp proofed, never mind a chiropractor

Doesn't he even has an endless pool in there?

Really two minds about the guy - like the fact that he's a bit like us - a bit crap stylewise and throwing the odd hail mary trying to get better.

But the fanboy stuff irks me, also part of me wants the IM World Champ to be otherworldly good and LOOK it as well. Feels a bit diminished if some bloke wins it lolloping over the line with that funny hitched gait, having ridden the bike with knees sticking out like chicken wings (dunno what his swim looks like but probably similar....)

Those knees Shocked

I really like him but I think he's embarrassed himself a little with the nutrition stuff he's been vlogging on recently.
I like that he give us an insight into the training and power numbers but the stubbornness he displays is strange for someone at the very highest level.

Hire a coach and a nutritionist for 1 season and see if you can clean up. He may be able to win Kona by 5 minutes with a coach and change in styles (he prob won't but looking at the state of him, you'd think there were a lot of gains to be made)

I also think the whole 'home schooled' thing is cute for a year or so, but quickly wears thin. he's obviously talented, he's done better than most people having stood on the podium at Kona, so now is time to cut the cr*p and start acting professionally. If you really want to win the race then go seek advice, work with the right people and be the best you can. Or does he get some osrt of kick out of trying to 'stick it to the man' in a sort of weird tri world way?

If we go back a few years, long before there was an Internet, Slowtwitch or vlogs to cloud matters, there was another self-coached guy who did pretty well at Kona, despite his quirky running gait.

His name was Dave.

Would he have been better if he was 'advised' though?! Wink

LIONel certainly seems to have a support team - not quite the lone wolf carrot cruncher some try to make him out as. I'd like t osee him win next month, and Skipper break into the single digits, which he could if he could only catch the bike train.

He uses a Wahoo TICKR like me #pro (I really recommend these over the overpriced fragile Garmin sh!t)

For me i'd like to see Sebi win again, with Cam and Gomez on the podium. Not saying that'll happen by any means, but that's what i'd like to see.

Kienle will always be there or thereabouts; incredibly consistent. I think it's been made a bit 'easier' for the strong bikers, as they have strength in numbers at the moment. Historically they've been alone out front dangling in the wind: Zack, Hellriegel, Stadler, Lieto etc. I think Stadler's wins and bike splits are all the more impressive now; winning in '06 with a solo effort for the bike record.

Yeah having seen the recent videos I think far from being a bonkers guy trying things at random, he seems to be a switched on guy who's savvy with social media (and a decent athlete).

Firstly - his training day wasn't that nuts really. Skipper's recently been doing 180K rides (OK not quite at 300W) followed by 25/28K progressive runs on Successive weekends.

Secondly - the videos are pretty well put together, the 2 parts leaving everyone dangling, cool drone footage, shipping in a beer mile training partner etc. is not the work of someone who got up and decided to do an ironman in training on a crazy whim.

Thirdly - great product placement. Bascially he's drummed into the vid "I was #@?# in Tremblant, but now I'm drinking Gatorade Endurance it's all good" but in a likeable engaging way. I also noticed the large Garnieu gazebo at the side of the cycle track they had.

Fourthly - who fancies 180K solo on that road 'surface'? Ouch. No traffic though which I guess is a bonus.
