hi guys I have an an Ultegra 10 groupset on my bike at present which is awesome ... well I thought so but have just done a training wknd in Helvelyn and attempted Kirkstone pass ... will need to convert my groupset to a triple somehow for the race at least ..... am no bike mechanic so could do with a few helpful suggestions if you would; I'd prefer not to shell out for a whole new groupset are there simpler and cheaper ways of acheiving the same result ..... ????

I refuse!!!
I'm not buying new gearing for one race. My bike will be going up the Kirkstone Pass using the gears that it's got on it now (whatever they are). If I have to get off and walk I'll probably be walking as fast as those riding it.

I'll be using 39-27 and that got me up whrynose after 100mile so will defo get me up the struggle!

I did it last year with a 12-26 on the back and a 39 on front. It was hard but just about manageable!
Beware the little dip near the top of the climb. Something funny happens to your legs and the last bit just before the Pub is a killer!

gotta have goals

Hey Matty, the struggle is considerably harder than Wrynose...but not as hard as Hardknott.
I've been up the struggle 4 times and you can divide it into roughly 4 sections [you can tell it's etched on my mind forever ].
1. From the mini roundabout it's very steep up through the village and then flattens out for a bit. Hard but your legs are fresh so it's OK.
2. The meat of the climb, maybe 2 miles, comes after about 100yards respite and seems to go on for ever. Out of the saddle stuff all the way with occasional short steeper sections and no respite. Near the top of this section are two very steep bits, as steep as the steepest bits of Hardknott but thankfully not very long.
3. A short downhill section before the final climb where you can get a breather
4. The final climb. There is one very steep corner low down, best to zig-zag across the road here if there is no traffic and then a steady grind to the top - how well this bit goes depends on how much you have left in the tank.
All my ascents were in a 12/25. I now have a 12/27 and think that would make a lot of difference this time round if I hadn't already pulled out.
Have fun everybody, it's a great race. _________________ At what point did Mr T learn about ultra-running?

Oops forgot to say that the average gradient for the 3+ miles is 13%.
I read that the steepest climb on the TDF this year was 9%. _________________ At what point did Mr T learn about ultra-running?

I still can't believe you're scared to come up there to race me cobbie. I feel very let down
Sorry Iain,
Was looking forward to giving you a good beating
The reality is that I don't want to put any pressure on my recovery. Doing the bike at TLD yesterday made me realise that my cycling has been much more badly affected by the crash/injury than I would have guessed. Basically, I can't lock out on the bars so yesterday was trying to do this left handed which has left me very sore and stiff.
I need some time to recover properly without the pressure of a race deadline, especially one where I had such a good result in 2005.
I will definitely be at Ludlow though for the South Shropshire sprint. _________________ At what point did Mr T learn about ultra-running?
