...out for an hours run this a.m and as I was passing a council offices building I happened to notice a young lad shivering outside the main entrance in a shirt and tie sucking frantically on a fag - no sympathy I thought, council regulations about smoking at work and all that. Then the irony hit me good style. Directly opposite where he was having his fag is a hospice!!!!!!!

I've had the odd patient of mine turn up for appointments and tell me that they've just finished treatment for cancer; you'd think at that point they'd quit smoking, but no.

People are strange, I guess.

my mum works at this hospital for cancer rehab and everytime i've gone to pick her up there were loads of people standing in front of the building smoking... i really don't get it! i would go as far as to say that in those cases the health insurance/NHS or whatever should just not pay for rehab any longer, there obviously is no point! every time you visit the big maternity hospital in birmingham there are pregnant women outside smoking. I read somewhere that teenage mums have been known to start smoking during pregnancy hoping for a low weight baby and thus and easier birth.

I worked in the NHS for 3 years (care work in general for 10) and have to say it had the highest level of smokers of any job I've encountered (me included for 7 year Rolling Eyes knob!).

You'd have thought the opposite would apply and being a health pro would make you less likey to smoke...

Same at the JR in Oxford - you seem them in their gowns, dragging their drip along after them standing outside puffing away on a fag - it makes me really really mad!

I seem to recall from my uni days that the medics were the worst abusers of their bodies there - booze, fags, drugs. Obviously a bit of knowledge about how these things screw you up is no barrier to using them yourself.

At uni i used to work in a bar run by a very b1tchy, gossipy women. She smoked heavely all the way through her pregnacy, but what realy got my goat was overhearing a conversation she had slagging of a friend of mine who dared to have a small glass of red wine whilst pregnant !!!

You should see it up here now that all the pubs are non smoking, you have to fight your way through a fog of smke just to get in the pub

Can't wait for this to kick in in England, this year at Mrs Sched's works do was particularily bad for smokers in the bar area - a right pain having to wait in that nasty minging fog when waiting to be served and it was enroute to the dining area! Rolling Eyes
